The Turn of the Screw, by Henry James, is a well written ghost story detailing the fictional events at an estate in the town of Bly, England. This story is captivating and a thriller to read. Henry James has written over 75 works, varying in style from plays to novels. There are very few characters in this story which allowed for detailed characterization, and leaves the reader with a mental image of how they would view each character such as when the narrator, The Governess, tells the reader, “ I felt ... that I had seen him, on the instant ... the same … in which I had ... seen his little sister. The Governess is the first person to encounter one of the ghosts. One day while she is on a walk daydreaming about a man, she encounters a man. She sees him from far away and becomes worried since she and the people at the house were the only ones to be on the property. This really begins to worry her, and she begins to want to understand this mystery. This is another place that proves that she is a heroine, rather than being insane. A normal person would have nearly lost their sanity after such an encounter, and would immediately have questioned everyone about the man she saw. Instead of doing something like that, the Governess wants to understand this event herself. She encounters this man again as he is looking through the dining room window at her, but she then comes to the realization that he is looking for someone other than her. She then goes outside to investigate the stranger and why he would be looking through their window.
