The uglies contains themes of identity, especially in the case of teenagers. The government of Tally’s city controlled what happened within the operations and it, “removed responsibility for identity,” and this created sameness and unity. By placing heavy emphasis on individualism and the teen’s self conceit. With the theme of identity being a main concept of the book, it allowed me to relate to the text. This year I’m starting at a brand new public highschool with 1,500 students. However, my old school had merely 300 students and it was an international boarding school. Thus, I now have to start over on my identity. What my old friends, fellow students, and teachers knew me as is not going to be the same as what these new teachers, friends, and fellow students are going to know me as. Therefor, I have to start over on my identity. But, I don’t want my identity to blend in with everybody elses. I don’t want to have sameness and unity with any other person in Huntsville Highschool. I want to be like Shay and be different from everybody else. I do think this book somewhat “helped me to become a better person.” It made me realize what I need to do as a new student, that I need to be different. With this in mind I really liked The Uglies. It discretely spoke to me and gave me direction for my next school year. Also It was really well written and had a good plot. Because The Uglies spoke to me and was really well written and I enjoyed reading
