The Ugly Duckling
(1844)

[pic]T was lovely summer weather in the country, and the golden corn, the green oats, and the haystacks piled up in the meadows looked beautiful. The stork walking about on his long red legs chattered in the Egyptian language, which he had learnt from his mother. The corn-fields and meadows were surrounded by large forests, in the midst of which were deep pools. It was, indeed, delightful to walk about in the country. In a sunny spot stood a pleasant old farm-house close by a deep river, and from the house down to the water side grew great burdock leaves, so high, that under the tallest of them a little child could stand upright. The spot was as wild as the centre of a thick wood. In this snug retreat sat a duck on her nest, watching for her young brood to hatch; she was beginning to get tired of her task, for the little ones were a long time coming out of their shells, and she seldom had any visitors. The other ducks liked much better to swim about in the river than to climb the slippery banks, and sit under a burdock leaf, to have a gossip with her. At length one shell cracked, and then another, and from each egg came a living creature that lifted its head and cried, “Peep, peep.” “Quack, quack,” said the mother, and then they all quacked as well as they could, and looked about them on every side at the large green leaves. Their mother allowed them to look as much as they liked, because green is good for the eyes. “How large the world is,” said the young ducks, when they found how much more room they now had than while they were inside the egg-shell. “Do you imagine this is the whole world?” asked the mother; “Wait till you have seen the garden; it stretches far beyond that to the parson’s field, but I have never ventured to such a distance. Are you all out?” she continued, rising; “No, I declare, the largest egg lies there still. I wonder how long this is to last, I am quite tired of it;” and she seated herself again on the nest.[pic] “Well, how

For my Rhetoric-In-Practice (RIP), I decided to write fracture fairy tales on "Hansel and Gretel", "The Little Red Riding Hood" and "The Ugly Duckling". I take upon the role of Rory Madden, an experienced children's author promoting his newest book The Modernize Collection of Fairy Tales on his website. In my book, each fairy tale is revamped to target a modern audience and to address a specific issue with children and modern technology. My collection of fairy tales targets two audiences, my primary audience is third and fourth graders; meanwhile, my secondary audience is parents.…

Birds are rare and endangered. And in the middle of the painting, John Wolseley had painted another threatened bird – the South-Eastern Red-tailed Black Cockatoo. In this work, the birds move about in the foliage with a background of sixteenth and seventeenth century maps of the earth annotated. Curious elisions and shifts in the cartography hint that disturbing things may be happening. It may be that the map is being pulled from underneath the parrots in a similar way that increased temperatures caused by global warming may force them to move north or south – leaving far behind the feeding grounds and habitat they need to survive.…

Matthew Arnold’s masterpiece, Dover Beach, has been dissected and analyzed endlessly since its release in 1867. In order to understand the meaning of the poem, it is important to grasp both the important events of the time during which it was written and Arnold’s personal background. In the latter part of the nineteenth century many European and American artists and writers began to focus on the virtues of individualism and free thinking, rather than the concepts of rationality or religion that had previously dominated the philosophical and artistic communities. This shift in philosophy was catalyzed by a number of developments of the mid-nineteenth century, specifically, two scientific discoveries that led many to doubt the previously unquestioned religious explanation of the origin of life on earth. In his analysis of Dover Beach, Earl G. Ingersoll points to geologist Charles Lyell’s discovery of fossils dating back over one million years and Charles Darwin’s publishing of On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, both of which occurred during the 1850s, as scientific findings that “were making it increasingly difficult to accept the traditional notion in the book of Genesis that the world is the work of a creator a mere six or seven thousand years ago.” (Ingersoll) The questioning of the Bible’s stories…

The story opens on a serene summer morning. One house is left standing after a huge disaster, probably of some nuclear force, destroyed the rest of the city. The house keeps living in its own world as if nothing ever happened, making breakfast for its family and readying the car for the usual morning commute. Computerized voices heard throughout the house remind the inhabitants of appointments, birthdays, and holidays. The reader thinks this day is not unlike any other and that all is serene until he reads of the disastrous condition covering the remainder of the surrounding world. Still, the house keeps going as if it is the Energizer Bunny. Voices flowing out of the front door query surviving animals, " 'who goes there? What 's the password? '". The animals that seek the house as refuge from the disaster are turned away as the abode shuts itself up to quietly live out the rest of its existence. Now, the reader may infer that the house is simply an entity within itself; however, the reader is shown signs of earlier existence in the house. He stumbles…

I watched for about an hour, and mostly the duck just swam back and forth, back and forth, back and forth."…

This is the first thriller by Iris Johansen that I’ve read. She is an American author of crime fiction and romance novels. Johansen began writing after her children left home for college. She first achieved success in the early 1980s writing romances. In 1991, Johansen began writing suspense historical romance novels, starting with the publication of The Wind Dancer. In 1996 Johansen switched genres, turning to crime fiction, with which she has had great success. She had seventeen consecutive New York Times bestsellers as of November 2006. While Iris Johansen's style has evolved over the years, the same skill that made her "one of the leading authors of romance fiction" has helped establish her reputation in a broader field. As Catherine Coulter noted, "Iris Johansen is a bestselling author for the best reason -- she's a wonderful storyteller."…

    * When the owl appeared among the animals it was high noon and the sun was shining brightly. He walked very slowly, which gave him an appearance of great dignity, and he peered about him with large, staring eyes, which gave him an air of tremendous importance. "He’s God!" screamed a Plymouth rock hen. And the others took up the cry "He’s God!" So they followed him wherever he went and when he bumped into things they began to bump into things, too.…

Soon, I came to a meadow that was full of flowers and little creatures playing. The grey cloudy sky seemed to clear and the sun began to shine. It had a thatched roof and an old oak door with a rusted handle. The small porch had an old rocking chair and table. The wood was rough and the gold paint was chipped.…
