That hurt but it’s my big day and that is okay.” Rachel said with two salty tears coming down from both ends, but she smeared them away with her cozy, navy blue sweatshirt that she bundles up in a human ball. “Sorry sweety, come and eat I think that you’ll like it.” Rachel’s dad said picking her up from the ground and holding her hand to the table. “Oolala this looks so scrumptious.” …show more content…

When Rachel got to school she greeted her friends and sat down in her navy blue chair that has a rough texture. “Good morning class.” Rachel’s teacher Mrs. Price said setting her purse on the ground next to her desk. “Good morning Mrs. Price.” Rachel said.
“Ugh, who's sweater is this.” Mrs.Price held up a very ugly sweater that had red wool, three buttons, one of the buttons was blue the other brown and the third one near the bottom was purple and they were in a weird form almost like a zig zag.
“I think that it’s Rachel’s.” A girl named Veronica said.
“That is not mine.” Rachel said with a chuckle. “Yes it is, I saw you wear it once.” Mrs.Price said while putting the ugly sweater on Rachel’s desk. “No it’s not I can promise you that.” Rachel said walking up to Mrs.Price and handing her the sweater, and then she walked back to her desk like nothing happened. “Stop it Rachel you are making a scene, now take the sweater and let me get started with class.” Mrs.Price exclaimed setting the sweater on Rachel’s desk one more

"You come see me after you've done your set tonight, okay? I... want to discuss how you've been doing here so far." This brings up the stereotype that Mexicans are poor and wear old, tattered clothing. This is portrayed when the teacher asks whom the jacket belongs to and Sylvia Salívar says, “I think it belongs to Rachel.”(156). This shows that she thinks the sweater is Rachel’s just because she believes in the stereotype that Mexicans wear old tattered clothing and are probably poor. This is very hard for Rachel to deal with because she is being wrongfully discriminated just because she is Mexican. Rachel expresses how difficult this is for her when she says, “ I move my pencil and books and eraser as far from it as possible. I even move my chair a little to the right. Not mine, not mine, not mine.”(158). This displays how much she hates being thought of as the owner of this sweater. Not only was a classmate discriminating her but her teacher as well. As her teacher saw Rachel trying to get as far away from this sweater as possible, she said, “You put that sweater on right now and no more nonsense.”(158). By her teacher saying this, it displays that she also believes that the sweater belongs to her just because of her ethnicity. This is when Rachel finally breaks down and starts weeping in the middle of class, all because she was discriminated for being Mexican. By the end of this terrible…
