Transgression of preference chooses, and equality because a street sweeper. This is obviously an oppressive environment because you have no choice on what you can do for the rest of your life. This also deals with the quote- “The laws say that none among men may be alone, ever and at any time, for this is the great transgression and the root of all evil.” That quote it saying that even no men can stand alone, and that it is the Transgressions choice on what you do, and on how you life your life. The society that Equality lived in was very oppressive, with few to no rights, you had no thoughts, no will, and no freedom. Everything that he wanted to do and that he had to do was decided by someone else, and any thoughts that he said aloud, was what his society thought. This society is one that is definity preserved by fear and loss of identity.
The sharp contrast between the city life and the life Equality 7-2521 discovered later was different in a lot of ways. For example, when he entered the forest he said “” (Rand, ). This implies that the forest was way different than the city, the trees and water were a sharper color, he was able to kill animals, he was able to read books for the first time. They also saw their faces for the first time, when Equality saw his face he said “” (Rand, ). This shows he was proud at his body figure and the way he looked. However, in the city, it was nearly the complete opposite. He has no choice on what he wants to kill and what he wants to eat. Also, he has no choice on what he does, because the Transgression Of Preference decides on what he does. He also couldn’t read books, and couldn’t have anything that's individual it says “” (Rand, ). This shows that the city life was evil, the colors were dull, there was no choices, and everything you did was under the Transgression Of Preference. With equality discovering the word I, everything has changed for Equality and the golden one. This shows that he now has individuality, and that he has an opinion. He will share the word I, and in the book it says “” (Rand, ). The word I changed the story and the mindset significantly for Equality, he shared the word to the Golden one, and now he had his own thought, his own will, and his own freedom.
