Margaret Ward lived on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake in Maryland about forty years ago.
Margret was born on a ship for slaves when it was on its way from Africa to Baltimore.This was before slavery was prohibited.Margret still young, showed traits of character that were regarded for someone of her race. She was capable of doing all kinds of housework. When any of the family was sick she acted as a nurse and cared for them.
When she was sixteen years old she went to live with her mistress which was married to a planter of the eastern shore.She hardly talked, even to the people that was the same race as her. Her master had become very angry with her due to her acting stubborn to his will. He whipped her because she had always felt that she couldn’t obey her master. Margret finally grew tired of her kid having to be left under a bush in the hot weather and decided that she wouldn’t let her child have to deal with the power of slavery.She said that she would rather die then to have her son have to live through what she had to.
That same day she decided to try to accomplish the escape of slavery. She held her son as tight as possible but not so tight to hurt him and she ran as fast as she could, following the north star.
