The Unicorn in Captivity is the most popular out of the seven tapestry series. Founded in South Netherlands dating between 1495 and 1505, it is now located in The Cloisters in New York. This tapestry is believed to be the last one made, but that still remains unsure. The illustrator has also remained unknown. The unicorn in this artwork has a peaceful look in its face even though it is chained to a pomegranate tree surrounded by flowers. In this tapestry the main focus is the beautiful white unicorn.
The unicorn lays graceful with a smile on his face and eyes looking as if it is hypnotized, looking out into space.
This artwork has many clues as to what it could symbolize but everything is still unclear. Many people believe that the unicorn

On the Archibald Prize website it has a statement from the artist. It explains what the painting already shows, the other better understanding I gained was that the person has no face because people should know who it is by the clothing that the person is wearing. My feelings as I viewed this art work was interested at why there was dog in the backpack or why the person had no face, it left me confused and made me create different theories as to explain what he had painted and why. I don’t see any message or don’t understand what type of message the artist is trying to send through this piece of art, it is very unclear. The expressive quality this piece of art work gives me is tiredness, as it makes me imagine lugging a heap of items in the desert. Also a sense of mystery as the person’s face is unknown. Symbolism has been used in the work as there is no face in the person which means something although a piece of paper is…

In my opinion, it looks like “El Albanil” which in English, means the laborer, is about to go start working. Either that, or he is taking a break from work, but he definitely looks like he is in the middle of something. This painting looks like the man is upset about something. Maybe he believes that his heritage is being treated unfairly. After all, it is clearly obvious that this man is Mexican-American. Maybe he feels that he should be appreciated more rather than being looked at how people see him. Maybe he wants to do more with his life than just work for people. Or perhaps he is proud of the work that he does and is showing off by the stance he is in.…

The unicorn tapestries is the title given to a set of six full tapestries, as well as three fragments of an additional tapestry, that depict the hunt of a unicorn. The tapestries are currently being housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The tapestries have a long and complicated history, of which much is left in the dark. The tapestries were woven in the Southern Netherlands around the year 1500 (Colburn 2010, 97). Five of the seven unicorn tapestries were speculated by James J. Rorimer to have been made for Anne of Brittany to commemorate her marriage to Louis XII in 1499, Rorimer explains Queen Anne’s supposed affinity for tapestries, “Judging from extracts from her inventories and expense accounts, Anne was one of the greatest collectors…

I think the painting is a form of expression in which the intention is to give the viewer an increased awareness of how we have become a materialistic society. Because of our increased desire for the better things in life it is easier to allow ourselves to become distracted and lose sight of what is truly important in life. As a society we want to strive to be better in everything we do. In the past our american culture has taught us right from wrong, to love God and country and to stand true to our families. The importance of those morals and values seem to have disappeared. The black bird or raven can be a positive symbol of mankind's desire to be moral and spiritually…

    The Annunciation Analysis

Many of the objects depicted in High Renaissance paintings were there for a reason. In “The Annunciation,” Mary is the largest figure and the main focus. She is shown facing front, with her head tilted toward the floor and her eyes almost closed. In her left hand she is holding the Bible, representing her devoutness to God, her right hand is raised, all fingers pointing up. Archangel Gabriel is on the left side of the panel, shown smaller and wearing the ornate vestments of a priest. His clothes symbolize the similarity between him and the clergy of the Church: they both share the word of God. They are both wearing very loose fitting clothing that have many folds. The Holy Trinity is represented here by God, baby Jesus carrying his cross, and a dove, often a symbol of the Holy Spirit. They are all connected by seven rays of light, flowing directly from God’s mouth onto Mary. The seven rays represent the seven days it took God to create the universe. Gold is used as a symbol to represent divinity (Smith). White lilies in a vase between angel Gabriel and Mary often symbolized Mary’s purity. Written on the vase is “Ave Regina,” representing the Hail Mary prayer. The Latin words written in gold are archangel Gabriel telling Mary, “‘Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus’” (Luke 1:31). Symbolism can also be found in the frame of the painting. The three arches at the…

The woman is wearing a white robe and is draped in a blue material. The color blue is also found in the sky and in the flowers that one of the children is extending to the woman. Pink is very prominent in the painting. A piece of the figure’s clothing is pink and the clouds are pink. The winged children have a pink hue as well. The color white is significant because the bird above the woman is white. The light in this painting appears to be radiating from the woman, further deeming her importance. The lighting and colors found in the work are used to show that the communication between the bird and the woman is important…

This actually reminds me of how women In Iran or Afghanistan used to or still do make the rugs. They use the same technique to make different types or rugs. Going back to the artwork the unicorn’s horn was actually believed to be an antitoxin for poison. In the picture it shows that the unicorn dips it’s horn into the stream to purify the water from the mountain. Not just the unicorn but everything has a symbol and a very meaningful definition for it. Lastly, the artwork that I liked the most, and has been one of my favorites is the Mona Lisa painting that was painted by Leonardo da Vinci. Mona Lisa was twenty-four years old when her portrait was painted, and she was also wife of a prominent Florentine merchant. I’ve heard a lot about this painting, not based on the book, but other sources. Today Mona Lisa is Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous painting in the world. People from all around the world visit Mona Lisa in Paris. According to Daniel Tovrov Mona Lisa painting has six million visitors per year. Mona Lisa’s smile is the reason why it is so famous today, and everyone knows about. Mona Lisa’s half smile has puzzled…

I believe this painting shows a loss of identity. This is the reason I chose this as my favorite piece of art, because I can relate to it. There came a time in my life where I was struggling with my own identity. In today's world it is very significant to identify oneself with at least one thing (ones ethnicity, nationality, race, religion, or a particular belief). Many people still grapple with the notion of identity in many countries, regions, and various ways in order to fit or adapt into any environment (social, economic, cultural, political, etc). One’s identity determines ones position or situation in society wherever one lives. However, finding the right type of…
