The Unusual Want: Should More Women Join Construction?
The Unusual Want During high school, I took a school program that most students didn’t know about. When I walked into the class, I soon realized that I was the only girl. Without any idea of mind, I was in a Machining course that I would be in for two years. When senior year came, a new career path sparked into my mind that was completely opposite. Most people that have gone through high school, or are going through high school have various ideas about the future. I thought I was the lucky one and found mine right away but I realized that my views and ideas changed. I started getting interested in the Construction industry but a million questions came into my head. Should more women join Construction? To start this long process off, I simply went to google and asked the point blank question. I wanted to get a good source to go off of, so I found the most recent one called “Why Construction is a Great Career for Women”. This author, Amanda Collins, interviewed Crystal, who has been a project manager …show more content…
I looked up an article, but this time by a man. His name was Tyler, and he has been in the construction industry for many years. His article was called “Is it time for more woman in the construction industry?” He states “It is obvious that woman would benefit the construction industry.” (Tyler). He explains that gender roles are taught at a very young age and it is in everyones nature to act the way they were raised. He brings up a very depressing point of why many women drop out of the career. He states “Also, sexual harassment of female colleagues is an issue that is often overlooked.” (Tyler). Tyler brought a smile to my face as I read this article but at the same time he has a very valid point. Something I had never really thought about. He made me realize why 88% of women drop out.     Mom was an aeronautical engineer before she was a stay at home mom so I fully believed that anyone could and should be an engineer based only on their intelligence and wit. The only way this might have affected my choice is in the kinds of majors my high school teachers suggested. It’s possible that they suggested careers that fit their perception of male careers, and I was very much influenced by my teachers’ suggestions because they are people I respect.     In the TED presentation “Why We Have Too Few Women Leaders” presenter Sheryl Sandberg describes why women do not reach the top in any profession around the world. She begins the presentation by admitting that the women now are lucky because they did not live in the world our mothers and grandmothers experienced in the past. Shortly after, Sheryl reports some numbers and data to describe the problem clearly. For example, in the U.S. just nine women are head of state, another example is that women in parliament around the world constitute 13%, and about 16% of women are in board seats in the corporate sector. In short, just 20% of women are in the top profession. Also, she reported study about married senior managers, which showed that two thirds of married men had children, and only one third of the married women had children. Moreover, she tells the story of when she went to New York to pitch a deal and the director did not know where the location of the women’s restroom was because he did not work with any women in his office. Thereafter, Sheryl sent three letters for women who wanted to stay in workforce. The first message was “sit at the table”. She thinks that women are underestimating their own abilities and do not have self-confidence. Sandberg highlighted that when she was a college student, her brother did not attend classes and did not want to study. On the other side, her roommate studied a lot and attended all her classes, but when they finished the test of their class, her brother said that the test was easy and her roommate was not sure about what she did.
