Student essay
I would like to participate in the upward bound program because, It seems very fun and entertaining. I have heard it's a great learning experience and I want to be a part of it. I think it may beneficial to me mentally because it's good to have some fun every now and learn. I hope to get the opportunity to connect and experience things with other students, and prepare me for things in life that are to come such as college and being in a college environment that I may not be a custom to. I want to be successful and go to college and have a good career. I believe upward bound will help me to reach and conquer my dreams. I think it may also help me figure out how to become a pediatrician or even insight me with other careers that I may be interested in. I come from a family that's not very good with academics but were great athletes. I can have the best of both worlds with Upward bound to motivate and help me want to do better. My parents and teachers are kind of a good help but, I think upward bound is better. They say education is the key to success. I want to be a successful person and have a good life. Sometimes i think about how hard people say it is in college and taking test that make and break your chances of getting a degree. The pressure and the college life its self makes me second guess. I believe upward bound can show me how it is and answer my questions. My dad taught upward bound when he was younger, he told me it's a great experience and it always good to see what it's like doing something your parents once did. My mom and dad are on me a lot about staying on top of my grades, and helping me learn about my career, and asking me about what college I want to go to. They always tell me hard work pays off but, no one can you do it for you, you have to do it yourself. I want to be something in life, I do the best I can do in school. I sometimes get irritated when I don't get things in a class or remember what a teacher tells me. I get so irritated because I know it can get it. In middle school I wasn't in any gifted classes, I thought I should be in them my teachers did too. Come high school I have accelerated classes. People have told me I'm smart and have the ability to learn more if I just put my mind to it and focus more. I think upward would give me that extra push I need to succeed. My goals as a student in upward bound would be to keep good grades throughout the school year, stay focused, and do my best in all classes. Seniors have told me how great upward bound is and how much it helped them get through. I hope to do the same some day and, be able to tell younger people under
me what it helped me with and got me through. I will be a great student in this program and not and embarrassment. I hope i will be able to attend the upward bound program, and be proud to say I was a part of upward bound.

When I started my junior year of high school I went to the career center for dental assisting. I was expecting to go to enroll into Columbus State Community College, get a major in Dental Hygiene, and then get my Dental Hygienist license in two years. However, after the last two years of being in the Dental Assisting program, like Shelia, I knew I did not want to be what I thought I wanted to be. I am going in a new direction, to major in nursing. One reason is, since I was young I always took extra concern for people’s wellbeing and would like to make a career out of it. I would also like to expand my nursing and become a Pediatrician. The second reason why Shelia’s story is relatable to mine is that I am great with little kids and I think that being a Pediatrician would be a good career for…

I cannot believe it is senior year! Where did the time go? I remember my first day of ninth grade like it was yesterday. High school has flown by so quickly, it is crazy to think at the end of this school year I will be out of school. I will be the first person to graduate in my family since my grandma did fifty years ago. I have to start thinking about what I am going to major in during college and the type of career I would enjoy doing for the rest of my life, or until retirement. What should I do now? What do I need to do to get there at this point in time? For a few years now, I have been considering a career in neonatal nursing or a career in pediatric psychology. As of today, I think that a career as a neonatal nurse practitioner would be better suited for me.…

I knew that I would probably go to college some where in state, come back to our little town and work as a nurse or in an office like my mom or nana. My computer teacher had us go on a website and answer a couple of questions to see what my range of my possibilities is, and of course one of the first ones was a nurse and human resources. Then I started looking deeper into the possibilities I had. The two I found most interesting were Epidemiology and Sociology. Both sounded very intriguing and in both professions I would be able to help people. I started to look at epidemiology, I noticed that if I would work really hard at it I would be able to work at the CDC (Center for Disease Control). It looked very interesting and the job outlook is very high. So my chances of getting a job is very likely. But as I looked for jobs at the CDC there was next to nothing. I still decided to do the presentation on it though. The presentation was very fun but presenting was a little scary. As the year progressed though I learned that in order for me to be able to become an epidemiologist I would have to enter an internship for at least a year then work my way up from a small college lab to the CDC. I would not end up in my dream work space until I am about thirty five to forty years old. So I started looking into sociology, and became very…

Ever since I was young, teachers will always tell my parents "what a bright student she is." I never thought they meant it. Teachers say those things to make sure you always do your best, and it did help for a while. During my middle school years, I never cared about my grades. I thought it was "cool" just to sit back and relax. I was under a terrible influence, and nobody was there to pick me right up. I had friends who did not motivate me to do good in school.
