to Snowball, the animals of Animal Farm were too afraid to even raise their voice. Napoleon was able to intimidate them using ferocious dogs. Hence, he made himself leader of Animal Farm. Another example of where Napoleon was able to gain full control of Animal Farm was when he slaughtered an abundance of comrades. After that, he changed the national anthem. Orwell wrote, “But the Rebellion is now completed. The executions of the traitors this afternoon was the final act.” (Orwell 96). The animals wanted to speak up but the recent massacre caused them to lose all hope and courage. These two examples demonstrate how Napoleon successfully utilized fear to intimidate the animals and take over Animal Farm. The second reason why fear was the most successful type of propaganda is that the animals agreed with all of the pigs’ doings even though it went against the Seven Commandments. One example of this was when Squealer explained why the pigs deliberately devoured the apples and drank the milk. The author wrote, “Do you know what would happen if we pigs failed in our duty? Jones would come back!” (Orwell 52). The animals were terrified of Jones coming back if the pigs did not receive enough nutrients for their brains. So, they allowed to let the pigs eat the apples and drink the milk. Additionally, the pigs moved inside the farmhouse to sleep on beds. Apparently, they needed adequate sleep in order to properly lead the farm. Orwell said, “Surely none of you wishes to see Jones back?” (Orwell 80). Even though sleeping on beds was against the Seven Commandments, the animals still allowed the pigs to do it due to the fact that they were afraid of Jones returning if they refused to do so.
In conclusion, fear was the most effective propaganda in Animal Farm because the animals let the pigs do anything that went against the Seven Commandments, and Napoleon was able to take ultimate authority of Animal Farm.
Although there were other types of propaganda that occurred in Animal Farm, fear still proved to be the most effective type of propaganda. There were instances of testimonial and repetition in the story, however they were not as influential as fear. Many countries constantly make use of fear to get the citizens to comply to their orders. In fact, the United States of America uses fear to influence foreign countries. This propaganda proved to be extremely successful in the book and it does affect people in the real world as
well.
