The book "Friday Night Lights", is a book about a team of high school football players; all with different characters, personalities, and situations. The town of Odessa, in Texas is where the story begins and takes place in. To some of the players, football is just a game and for others, it is much more. To portray the mood and feeling that there is more than what meets the eye, Bissinger uses various rhetorical strategies throughout writing the book; however the strategies that are more often seen throughout is his use of pathos, ethos, and his way of structuring.…

Sustaining the ambitions of not only themselves but the alumni and town of Odessa, Texas is a lot to ask from a young adult. That’s exactly what Permian football provides to the people of Odessa, where the post economic boom of the oil business has left the town in a racially tense, economic crisis. The lights on Permian High School’s football field are the only sanctuary for the west Texas town. Socially and racially divided, Odessa’s mass dependence on high school football constructs glorified expectations for the football team to temporarily disguise the disappointments that come with living in a town tagged as the “murder capital” of America. In Friday Night Lights, H.G. Bissinger reveals the ugly truth behind a town whose integrity relies on a few young men. Bissingers work examines far beyond sport, but more deeply into Odessa’s sociological constraints that are rooted within the town. The purpose of this paper is to identify how the role of high school football affects the racial/gender relations and educational mission of the residents and institutions of Odessa, Texas.…
Boobie Miles in the book Friday Night Lights had minor differences from Boobie Miles in the movie. In the book they touched on boobie’s background and how he got to live with his uncle L.V. the movie didn’t touch on that. In the book Boobie had more pressure on him to do well in football than in the movie. The Odessa townspeople felt like he was only good for football and after his injury he was a nobody. In the movie people were less hateful towards him even though he suffered the serious injury.…

The Big Bang Theory premiered on CBS in 2003. When the show began it centered on five characters. Four of the five characters are genius young men whom all work at the same university as scientist, Leonard Hofstadter, Sheldon Cooper, Howard Wolowitz, and Raj Koothrappali. With their love of comic books, role-playing games and individual quirkiness these characters are examples of “nerds”. The show begins when roommates Leonard and Sheldon meet their neighbor Penny, a beautiful all be it dumb blond whom is aspiring to become a actress, but works as a waitress at The Cheese Cake Factory. In 2011 Sheldon and Howards love interest, Amy and Bernadette, whom previously held supporting roles were promoted to full time members of the cast. This offered a new element to the show providing a contrast to the mainly male dominated show.…

A Game of Thrones is set in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, a land reminiscent of medieval Europe. Fifteen years prior to the novel, the Seven Kingdoms were torn apart by a civil war, known as the “War of the Usurper." Prince Rhaega Targaryen kidnapped Lyanna Stark angering her family and of her fiancé, Lord Robert Baratheon. The Mad King, Aerys II Targaryen had Lyanna' father and brother executed when they demanded her safe return. Her second brother, Eddard, joined his boyhood friend Robert Baratheon and Jon Arryn in declaring war against the ruling Targaryen dynasty. The civil war ended when Prince Rhaegar was killed in battle by Robert Baratheon. The wealthiest family around The Lannisters finally agreed to support King Aerys, but then turned against him, by capturing the capital at King's Landing. Jaime Lannister of the Kingsguard betrayed and murdered King Aerys and House Lannister swore loyalty to Robert Baratheon. The Tyrell and remaining royalists surrendered and Robert Baratheon was declared King of the Seven Kingdoms. Unfortunately, during the war, Lyanna Stark had died, apparently of illness shortly after her brother captured the fortress where she'd been held captive. Robert Baratheon instead married Cersei Lannister to cement the alliance with her House. Despite Robert's victory, the Mad King's younger son Viserys and only daughter Daenerys were taken to safety across the sea by loyal retainers. Six years later, King Robert proved his resolve by defeating a rebellion by Lord Balon Greyjoy of the Iron Islands. Balon's two eldest sons were killed and his youngest son, Theon, was given to the care of Eddard Stark as a ward.…

Set in the fictional Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, Game of Thrones chronicles the violent dynastic struggles among the realm's noble families for control of the Iron Throne. As the series opens, additional threats begin to arise in the icy North and in the eastern continent of Essos. It is a cultural phenomenon based upon a world of fantasy and valor delving into the culture of Westeros, a similar culture to that of Western Europe, and Essos, similar to that of Eastern Asian culture. Aspects derivative of both primordial and contemporary traditional cultures are predominately seen throughout. Represented is a medieval time period in which kings reigned and classes were divided into highborn and lowborn sects. The traits of this medieval culture are directly correlated to the culture of the Western European society in which kings and nobles are still significant. The impact of the medieval is important in the sense that, in comparison to the modern day inertia, medieval culture offered more than that of technology and advancement. Within this culture, there was a purpose. There was no day to day monotony or leisure rather there was a need for survival and a necessity of skill. This culture allowed those within it to experience the world firsthand and learn of the cultures different from their own.…
