The bleak, snow filled landscape, is a factor in many internal conflicts. The wintry imagery is so overwhelming and oppressive, as snow, ice, and cold are constantly being used to describe the setting. One characteristic of Ethan is that he is indecisive. Throughout the book, he will begin to attempt what he wants, but will not follow through with it. This can be tied back to the bleak and oppressive setting, in which Ethan’s desires are suppressed, due to the fact that the coldness and stark features of the town drain the energy out of people, including Ethan. This constant conflict between what he wants, versus what he believe is ethical or possible, is one example of an internal conflict.…

Conclusion: The setting of Ethan Frome conveys the idea that Ethan is doomed from the start, from the winters in Starkfield to sledding down the slope with Mattie. Ever since the time of Ethan’s early life to into his fifties towards the end, it was made clear that Ethan’s tragic story was due to fate rather than his choices.…

Ethan’s life in a rural environment, suppressed the opportunity for him to become someone. (quote about Ethan not going to college). Ethan stays in Starkfield to aid his ill parents alongside his distant cousin Zenobia, “she’s always been the greatest hand at doctoring in the country” (Wharton 13). As a result of the crippling winter Ethan asks Zeena to stay with him after his mother’s passing and “in turn could do no less than marry her” (63). This was Ethan’s first mistake. Ethan had the chance handed to him to go and put himself through college and sell the farm; sadly Ethan’s sense of obligations prevailed. (Quote…

    Symbolism in Ethan from

Benjamin Franklin once said, “Where there is a marriage without love, there will be love without marriage.” (Benjamin) Marriage is the foundation for social order because it restrains us from self centeredness and self indulgence. However, with the wrong significant other, one can find themselves on the path to adultery. (Craven) Ethan Frome is a story of a family caught in a deeply rooted domestic struggle. In the novel, the main character Ethan is caught in a love triangle between his wife Zeena, and his maid Mattie. There are numerous themes and conflicts throughout the context. However, within the themes of weakness, isolation, poverty, loves and death, the author brings in five different symbols. A symbol is a thing that represents or stands for something else, esp. a material object representing something abstract. (Symbolling) Moreover, they allow the characters to articulate their emotions more clearly to the reader, which is very useful in bringing light to the story, and it illuminates the meaning that cannot be expressed in words. For example, a dark room symbolizes darkness, depression, gloominess, and hopelessness; therefore we would link that part of the story with darkness. Although, some symbols are easy to define, others require more research and reading. Likewise, through reading Ethan Frome, the color red, pickle dish, cat, setting, and light and darkness all highlight the major conflicts that arise throughout the context. (Wharton)…

Archetypal tragic heroes are often portrayed in ancient settings with unrealistic situations. In the novella Ethan Frome, Edith Wharton, counters this opinion by crafting a tragic hero that both connects with the archetype and defies the classic setting. The novella takes place in wintery Starkfield Massachusetts, in modern times. Nevertheless, Ethan Frome fits the characteristics of an archetypal tragic hero, as he has a tragic flaw and increased awareness of his situation. Thus, many arguments claiming that Ethan is not a tragic hero can easily be countered with close analysis of Ethan Frome. Thus, Wharton proved that Frome was a tragic hero, despite being placed in a modern, American setting.…

The choices a person can make in a single heart beat can affect their entire life. Life can be cruel and unforgiving. Ethan Frome written by Edith Wharton and published in 1911 is a concrete example of how life can be a tragedy. The novel is about how Ethan Frome became disabled and the choice he had made decades ago that lead to the accident—or how the locals in the story prefer to call it as Ethan’s “smash-up.” His accident was the conclusion to his escape from his miserable life with an impossible love. Unfortunately, his choice did not go as plan and permanently impacted the lives of his sick wife Zenobia, his love interest Mattie, and Ethan himself. Another example of life being cruel and unforgiving is in the film Harold and Maude released in 1971. The film displays a young man fixated with death named Harold and his short-lived relationship with a woman on the verge of becoming 80 years old, Maude. Harold just like Ethan found an impossible love interest with Maude. Maude did not want to live pass 80 and decided to die on her own terms. Life is not always sunshine and happy-ending like those in fairy tales, Ethan and Harold are completely different characters but have a few parallels in common.…

In many books, a hero has a major flaw, which contributes to his downfall in the story. In the book Ethan Frome, the main character, Ethan, encounters a tragedy and is brought to ruin and suffers extreme sorrow, especially as a consequence of tragic flaw. Tragic flaw is a flaw in character that brings about the downfall of the hero of a tragedy. Ethan lacks the qualities that would help him take control of his life because he lets others boss him around and he gives in to any pressures he is faced with. However, his insecure self got him stuck in the midst of bad situations with no ways out, making him doomed to make the wrong decisions. Ethan first bad decision was moving to Starkfield in the first place. Even though he couldn’t possibly know what was in store for him, Ethan made a dreadful decision because he moved to Starkfield under his power, and could have left just as willingly at the right time if he knew how to handle himself. Instead, Ethan stayed in Starkfield, married Zeena, and things just went downward from then on. Ethan’s decision to stay in Starkfield eventually made him a victim of the circumstances because he had no one that he could actually relate to, forcing him in the middle of a miserable situation.…

After the Civil War many of the “Lost Cause” advocates stated that their work was not political, this statement is proved correct as the majority of their work was social. The South’s desire to protect the “southern way of life” was the main cause of the “Lost Cause”. Reconstruction left behind the unfortunate legacy of unsuccessfully ending segregation among races in the South, as it did little to fix the issues that the Civil War was fought for.…

This legend was first documented in 1967 at the University of Utah, but could still be older. I was first introduced to this legend from our readings in The Vanishing Hitchhiker. This legend has narrative polish after being around for decades and it seems like a very plausible scenario. The legend goes that a woman is leaving a place late at night and a car begins to follow her on her way home. The other driver flashes their headlights during the drive, but the woman does not stop until she gets home. As she gets home, she runs for the front door and her husband comes out to figure out why his wife is in distress. As the mystery driver is confronted he tells the couple that he saw a person in the backseat of the wife’s car. The husband then…
