Jan.5th A Parenting Comparison between two siblings from different families Raising children has always been a challenge for parents. In a perfect world, every child would be wanted and loved, and all parents would have the capacity and the desire to raise children who are kind and respectful to the people around them and especially their parents, but most of the time parents use different ways of educating their children. Such is the case in Harper Lee 's novel, To Kill A Mockingbird and in the short story The Veldt, written by Ray Bradbury. The two stories have the following characters who are related to each other: siblings, brothers and sisters who are showing the difference between …show more content…
It is very important for parents to be able to communicate openly and effectively with their children, but not every parent succeeds. Comparing The Veldt and To Kill A Mockingbird, the two siblings from the short story The Veldt ,Peter and Wendy talk to their parents in a disrespectful way, while the two siblings from the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Jem and Scout talk to their father most likely the way they talk to their teacher in respectful way. For example, on page thirty five in the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Jem and Scout call their father by his first name "Atticus" which is followed by "sir." They call him Atticus because they are formal with their father. Calling him by his first name followed with "sir", shows that the father and his children see each other as equals ,and that the kids treat their father in a respectful way. Likewise, when Peter and Wendy came back home their parents ask them to tell about the nursery and they just lied. On page five in the short story, The Veldt, Peter acts totally different from Jem and Scout: " 'I don 't remember any Africa, ' said Peter to Wendy ." " 'Do you? ' ", " 'No. ' " (Bradbury 5).This demonstrates that the kids, Peter and Wendy can lie to their parents eyes without even getting embarrassed. It shows their disrespect and in some way it shows that the kids don 't take their parents seriously, that they …show more content…
In Lee 's novel, Scout tries to do her best to protect her father, while Peter and Wendy try to kill their parents. By way of illustration, on page one hungered seventy five when Mr.Cunningham and his men came to Atticus house to kill him, Scout sees them and start to have a conversation: " 'Hey, Mr Cunningham. How 's your entailment gettin ' along? ' " (Lee 175). At the end of the conversation between Scout and Mr.Cunningham, he tells his men to get going. One can infer that by this conversation Scout had saved her father 's life, just by being nice to other people. Maybe at first she didn 't even realized what she had done, but later on she did. The next day she had been asking Atticus questions about those men that came to their house, that shows that she was worried about her father being hurt. While Scout tried to protect her father Peter and Wendy tried to find a way to kill their parents. On page seven in the short story The Veldt, when the parents ran up stairs to see what is going on with their kids because they were calling them for help, the kids just locked them in the nursery and left. The last thing their father heard was : " ' Don 't let them switch off the nursery and the house, ' Peter was saying."(Bradbury 7) Peter and Wendy hated their parents so much that they were even
