Every year, a new smartphone or tablet is released for the technology fed generation on Earth. Everyone must get their hands on the new device. Children, at the age of 6, carry smartphones big as their craniums. Teenagers, glued to their phones during every important lesson they will take. Adults, drive down speeding highways texting a dear friend. If you don’t acquire the new technology you are represented as an outcast. Many years before modern technology was invented, Bradbury wrote compelling short stories on technology far from the time written. Short stories including, The Veldt and The Pedestrian. Bradbury’s ideas warn the reader, that personal technology will invade and shatter personal relationships.
Bradbury shows technology overpowers the love in relationships. In the Veldt by Bradbury, two working parents have a son and daughter, Peter and Wendy. The parents could not love and nurture their children, so in an effort to make a place for the children to feel loved, they build a nursery. The nursery is not an …show more content…
ordinary nursery. It creates a “world” for the children when they think about a place. The children were missing the love from their parents, so they spent more time with the nursery. Even when the parents try to take their children on vacation, the parents realize the nursery is taking their place.“I tried to lock the nursery, the tantrum they threw, They live for that nursery” (The Veldt) The parents didn’t teach them right from wrong because they were away most of the time. The parents realized the children relied on the Nursery and not them, but it was too late. The children feared losing their “Artificial parent”, so they locked their biological parents in the nursery with lions to be killed. “The lions on three sides of them, then the sound of familiar screams filled the air” (The Veldt) Therefore the technology in their house destroyed their relationship with their parents.
Not only does personal technology over power love, technology takes hold of emotions and make humans believe they need it. In the Pedestrian by Bradbury, Mr. Mead is not influenced by technology so he takes a walk on a very quiet deserted street. The rest of the town is not so lucky. “The homes and cottages have dark windows, and that is unequal to walking in a graveyard”(The Pedestrian) Soon a police car with artificial intelligence comes and demands Mr. Mead to watch television, and when refused the car demands him to go to a psychiatric hospital. The fact that Mr. Mead is labeled crazy is a support to the controlling of humans by technology. If someone was present they could have reasoned with a real police officer. Which in theory was replaced by the artificial intelligence police car. Everyone in town was in a psychedelic trance once the televisions are turned on. This opens an opportunity for television to interfere with family and friend relationships.
Granted, personal technology can aid long distance relationships.
In many long distance relationships, technology is key for their survival. Without Technology there would be no communication and the relationship will shatter. According to Gcsunade.com, “ Relationships that start off using technology as the basis for getting to know each other tend to last longer and are sometimes for life”. The need for technology is critical to maintain a good long distance relationship. On the other hand, many strong relationships are local. According to Gcsunade.com, “It (technology) is a substitute, but it is an unequal substitute,” Even though technology might aid long distance relationships, technology also crack local relationships. Without strong local relationships, we become more dejected and begin to push away all relationships. Which is why technology does aid to the scattering of
relationships
Therefore, one of the biggest problems in relationships is technology. Whether its for a struggling family that needs a backup plan when parenting styles drop, or the non stop viewing pleasure of citizens. Technology plays a key role in everyone's life. Without technology, many relationships would still be alive and also thriving. Not to say Technology is the main problem in relationships, it makes an impact on the millennial generation. Bradbury's ideas and modern thought conclude Technology is and aid to shattered relationships.
