The War of the Posters
The War of The Worlds is a science fiction novel written by Herbert George Wells (commonly known as H. G. Wells). It was first published in 1898 and was one of the first works of literature that detailed an alien invasion on the Earth and mankind. The novel focuses on the narrator who struggles to find his wife in the midst of a Martian invasion on southern England. Several films have spawned from the novel along with a television series, comic books, and other forms of media. The first movie that was based on The War of the Worlds was released in 1953, and the most recent was in 2005. Both movies issued film posters to help advertise, but while both posters have striking differences, they also share some similarities.
The 1953 poster has the title "The War of the Worlds" in a large, yellow, cursive font that is centered in the middle. H. G. Wells' name is in the top right corner in red. Orange-red flames cover the bottom half while the top half looks to be outer space with two blue planets. The planet closest to the top looks similar to Saturn; the other is unidentifiable and is on the right side of the poster. A large, tan alien hand with only three fingers menacingly reaches down towards a man and a woman who are surrounded by the flames. Compared to the alien hand, the couple is incredibly small. All of the images on the poster are drawings. The names of the producers, production companies, and the company that created the poster are all on the bottom of the tan border of the poster. There are no names of actors or actresses placed on the poster.
The 2005 poster uses computer enhanced details to enrich the images shown. The background of the poster is black. Tom Cruise's name is stretched across the top in silver. In the middle of the poster, a three fingered alien hand holds the Earth, almost caressing it. The planet itself is glowing orange as it seems to be completely

In the 1953 film War of the Worlds, director Byron Haskin utilizes a variety of different camera angles and movements to convey different feelings to the audience. This can be shown in the main battle scene when the alien ships fist emerge and destroy the US forces camping out there. In one shot, the camera is on a vertical tilt above the priest walking towards the alien ships. This allows the shot to convey a sense of weakness and fear within the priest as he walks closer to the Martian ships. While the camera is in a vertical tilt, it is also showing a motivated shot, panning to the right as the priest walks, thus showing the confidence the priest has in his himself and in god to stop the aliens from attacking.…

Everything we face another is facing it with us. Works of literature hold the truth of our past, present and future. Family often has a great influence on the decisions of our lives. Parents often are the greatest external influences that we consider. Similarly in The Wars, Timothy Findley’s main character – Robert Ross’ parents influence his actions throughout the book. Mrs. Ross is portrayed as an adamant woman who is not very expressive of her love towards her children (especially Robert) because of societal norms but a gradual change is seen as the book progresses; On the other hand, Mr. Ross has always been an affectionate man towards his children and remains a constant character throughout the book.…

“The Yellow Wallpaper” written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman engages the audience into the inner self of a young mother and wife throughout the story. The story has grown from a remedy to depression to a female defiance to a male society. Gilman’s purpose in writing “The Yellow Wallpaper” shows the courage a woman had to demonstrate a positive change in her self-identity and free her from the social, domestic, and psychological confinement that were placed on women in the 1800’s. By writing the story from a first-person feministic point of view the narrator shows the struggle of women’s independence and individuality in a male dominated society through gender stereotype that exist between the society and the protagonist in “The Yellow Wallpaper.”…

This piece of propaganda was created in 1942 during World War ll. In this poster, a Jap is holding a bloody knife, which supports the Japanese as being dangerous murderers. The pointed ears and sharp fangs also add to the danger of the character and make him appear as an animal-like creature. The squinted eyes and huge teeth shows the “physical attributes” of the Japanese. This piece of “art” shows a lot of stereotypical features of what a Japanese person looks like. The whole point of this poster was to scare americans and make them want to stay away from the Japanese. (To look at them in a bad way)…

An important part of any war that has nothing to do with battle is the people’s support. If the citizens do not want to win the war, the country will not win the war. So, to gain followers of their cause, the government will use propaganda and other methods of psychological manipulation. Propaganda was especially used by all countries involved in World War Two. A great many different kinds of propaganda were used, but arguably the most effective was film. Not only did the use of film help the war effort, but it also helped the film industry, especially animation, gain a leg up in society. War is a time for technological and societal advancement, and film is no exception.…
