For this first Essay, I will analyze “The Case against School Prayer” written by Annie Laurie Gaylor. I will analyze this essay based on The Toulmin model, which rely heavily on fact, value, and policy, as well as the Aristotelian Rhetoric, which draws upon logos, ethos and pathos. In the Toulmin model the main focus will include claims of fact, which are supported by data throughout the essay, and also claims of policy, which stress a change in allowing prayer to continue in public schools. The Aristotelian Rhetoric Focus will primarily be based upon logos, and ethos, because Gaylor’s essay relies heavily on her credibility. The use of logos is seen in that she quotes…
As part of a book project, I read "The Red Badge of Courage." It is about a soldier named Henry who wants to earn his mark as a soldier. Initially he strays away from the battlefield because he is afraid of death and wants to live among the living and not the dead. Later, he becomes desperate to get shot and earn his "Red Badge of Courage" to prove to the other soldier that he is not only a man but a true hero. The purpose of this project was to write a journal entry for a series of chapters and note rhetorical strategies used by the author. A author's purpose is then written in MLA format to compare the author to the book and learn more about the author in general. At the end of the book, we were to conduct a presentation about the book and…
Truman Capote’s attitude hey tries to convey in “In Cold Blood” is forgiving. In the book they KBI and the towns people mark the murderess as inhumane creatures, but later on in the story capote almost wants us to feel sorry for them because he tell us about the kind of child hood they had. I believe this aptitude he is trying to convey I captured very well in pages 252-253. In these pages Alvin Dewey is bringing Hickok and smith food because he doesn’t want them to sleep on an empty stomach. He convoy’s his attitude through imagery, detail, and tone.…
In my opinion, Reich does not reason emotionally. He has dialectical, logical explanations for why he is asking people to sign a petition to the CEOs of Walmart and McDonald`s. He proves that his work is not driven by feelings or personal preferences when he says: “Well, look, let`s be clear. I have nothing against Walmart…”and then proceeds with explanations and thought-provoking questions that prove his case and illustrate his reflective thinking. For example, “But doesn't the biggest employer in the United States have any social responsibility whatsoever?…
The feelings Richard Hickock’s parents have toward his life style are revealed as Capote incorporates jaded and disenchanted tones into the scene of their interrogation. Mr. and Mrs. Hickock spent years and years struggling to provide for Dick, their troubled son. In spite of their unwavering efforts to guide Dick along what they see as the right path, Dick’s parents are rewarded with nothing more than a heart wrenching feeling of shame and disappointment.…
Having gown up in Afghanistan prior to the Soviets invasion, Nelofer Pazira relays some defining aspects of her past in, “The Pilgrimage”. She describes her prewar vacation and her fond childhood memories to be “very different” from the media’s portrayal. One of her goals include authentically communicate what it was like to grown up in Afghanistan prior to the 1979 invasion of the Soviets. This portrayal was done through her childhood perspective, giving the essay a more simplistic point of view. The use of ethos is seen as, Nelofer is someone who is qualified to speak on the subject matter. In addition she appeals to the audience with pathos, the use of an emotional perspective helps vividly depicts her fondest childhood memories; as well…
Twain’s morbid narrative calls to action of the silent outcome of wishing for death when praying for war. Twain’s cynical argument, weaves the ironic idea of praying for peace and doing it in the most obscure way possible by killing. In the morose argument, Twain’s usage of rhetorical questioning is a major impact because it allows the readers to think in a new prospective rather than allows looking on the bright side: Everything has a ying yang, in this case a good and evil, which illuminates his diverse way of thinking. A didactic Twain uses contrast between an optimistic and pessimistic side of war through the two preachers: One preaching fervid spiritual speech on the courage of the young soldiers and asking for the aid of the god of battles…
1. Passage 1 (page[s] 170). “At Least half of my anger at you was sheer resentment that you had done something that I knew, buried deep in my heart, I should have done. But you weren’t the cause of my joining up either.. .…
Franklin D. Roosevelt asked “that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7th, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese empire.” to the nation. Declaring a state of war with Japan and convincing the people to support the war effort. The Pearl Harbor address to the Nation delivered by Franklin D. Roosevelt is one of the most famous speeches in American history. Roosevelt uses many rhetorical strategies to convince his audiences and relay his intent to the people and Congress. I will address his audiences, rhetorical strategies, and my opinion on the persuasiveness of his speech.…
The attack on Pearl Harbor is on the relatively short list of atrocities committed on the U.S. or organized incorporated U.S. territories, along with other tragedies such as the September 11th attacks. Considering these hardships do not occur very frequently in America, the natural reaction of the citizens is extreme, leaving political leaders and powerful figures to calm the chaos. The 32nd U.S. President, Franklin Delano Roosevelt executed this task on December 8th, 1941. He gave his “Pearl Harbor Address” informing the public about the attacks Japan had made the previous night. The event resulted in 2,402 deaths and the US entrance into World War II (Tampa Bay Times). He uses a confident and patriotic tone in order to reach his audience…
People who affiliate with the right-wing, all to often, conveniently neglect the First Amendment when it concerns matters regarding racial equality. The stains of the past cannot/should not be forgotten as hideous elements linger on in our current culture. I speak, of course, of the disproportionate incarceration rates of African Americans compared to whites and the proliferation of the number of instances when police officers use deadly force against minority populations. This, and this alone, was Colin Kaepernick's original message when he courageously took a knee during the National Anthem. The distortion of this fact and the deflection towards disrespecting the military and our country omits the central issue…
After reading “As a Weapon in The Hands of The Restless Poor” one can feel motivated to help those in need. Earl Shorris appeals to emotion when he talks about creating a program to start to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate. He starts out the story to say he is writing a book which makes him an author which is an example of ethos because he seems reliable. Shorris then states that the poor have been “Cheated” which is substantially true because the rich were given the opportunity to succeed more as someone who is poor and cannot even afford to feed themselves. In order to help the less fortunate out he has to create a program to help the poor succeed. After a Rhetorical analysis of “As a Weapon in The Hands of The Restless Poor” by Earl Shorris one can conclude that most people take for granted even the little things in life, if one were to open their eyes and see there are many people who do not have a dollar to their name, and we have so much that we tend to lose focus on helping the less fortunate succeed in the world we live in today.…
On November 19, 1863 Abraham Lincoln gave a reverent and humbling speech for the soldiers who had given their lives at the battle of Gettysburg for the reform and advancement of the country. He states that the brave men who here gave their last full measure of devotion” should be highly esteemed for the sacrifice they made. Lincoln establishes his ideas through the usage of rhetorical devices such as, an appeal to ethos, parallelism, and juxtaposition.…
An example when Alexie’s character, Jackson Jackson used humor in this story was when he was awoken from a drunken comma on the railroad tracks by a police officer. As Jackson wakes up he recognizes Officer Williams, a good white cop with a sweet tooth. “I am taking you over to detox,” Officer Williams said. “No man, that place is awful. It is full of drunken Indians.” They both laughed and drove off. “I do not know how you guys do it” he said. “What guys?” Jackson asked. “You Indians. How the hell you laugh so much? I just picked your ass off the railroad tracks, and you’re making jokes.” he said. Jackson replied, “The two funniest tribes i have ever been around are Indians and Jew, so I guess that says something about the inherent humor of genocide.” In this conversation Jackson uses humor to find laughter in a situation where Indian stereotypes say that all Indians are alcoholics. A further meaning to this is that Jackson uses humor to get past this situation. When compared to his life, multiple divorces, flunking out of college, and being a homeless alcoholic, shows his capability of moving on past events the way he laughed off the comment about drunken…
Mark Twain is noted by many as an influential writer in American Literature. Twain produced many great novels throughout his life. Some of his novels contained humor while others were implying a different set of thinking. Further pieces from Twain incorporated the current era of time or shared his viewpoints on certain moral aspects such as racism, religion, and war. War is noted all throughout American History with several authors composing their positions on the issue. One piece from Twain that discusses war is “The War Prayer.” In the poem, Twain uses a unique strategy in sharing his viewpoints on war and religion. This approach should be examined to gain a full understanding of how Twain’s piece relates to social, cultural, and intellectual…
