The Warhead Cable Test Dilemma
1)What stage of moral development do you think Stanton Wong is at? What about Harry Jackson? Why do you think so?
According to Kohlberg’s moral development theory, Stanton Wong is at post-conventional level. At this level, right action comes to be defined in terms of moral principles chosen because of their logical comprehensiveness, universality and consistency. It is because he is concerned with the well being of the innocent civilians and the military personnel if a missile misfired. Furthermore, he also thought how he can resolve this problem so that everyone is cared for equally that not harmed by the missile misfired. For Harry Jackson, he is at pre-conventional level. It is because he does not cares of others except if it benefits himself and how senior management can reward him.

2) What do you think Stanton should do now, and why? Use one or more of the methods of ethical reasoning presented in the chapter to support your view.
I think Stanton should ask the source inspector, Jane Conway to check the warhead cable and also report to Jane Conway about the failed samples first. If Harry Jackson still ignores to solve the problem then Stanton should report to senior management. Besides, he also can try getting someone in the parent company to get help. One of the methods of ethical reasoning is logic. I think it is logical for Stanton to report the mistakes to authorities as he cares for the civilians and the military personnel. The other method of ethical reasoning is consistency. I think the behaviour of Stanton is consistent with his caring attitude and always think that what he can do to solve the problem.

3) Should Stanton blow the whistle on his company? Why or why not?
I think Stanton should inform senior management and should not become an external whistle-blower because the media should not be involved. He should try to solve the problem internally first before involving outside parties. Furthermore, the company should have an

    Carter Mario was one of the worst violators. He was the one who initiated offering the kickback to the customer and bribing him with three neon beer signs. Previous to this situation, Patton had already suspected that he was stealing from the company. Carter Mario also persuaded his sales manager, George Pavlov, to go through with the deal to bribe the customer to buy the beer, even though Pavlov was uncomfortable with the situation. Lastly, Joe Roberts, the V.P. of Administration, handled the situation incorrectly by attempting to settle the issue himself without talking to Elizabeth Jones and Vince Patton. While I believe that Mario should be fired, this is not quite feasible for the company. Unfortunately, if Patton fires Mario, the whole company would suffer. Due to the ABC regulations, if Mario were to report what happened, “Westchester would be closed down for 45 days and Carter Mario would get away scot-free”. Therefore, Patton should keep Mario in the company but demote him to a driver. Being a driver is an extremely tough job, but it keeps Mario in the company while teaching him to be humble. On the other hand, I believe that Patton should decrease George Pavlov’s salary. Since Pavlov felt uncomfortable with the situation and turned to Joe Roberts for help, Pavlov should not have as serious consequences as Mario. By decreasing his salary, it shows that Patton is taking his actions seriously. Pavlov is still a key sales manager so keeping him in this position is the best move for the company. Unfortunately, Pavlov’s actions do violate ABC regulations so by simply decreasing his salary, it does not send a strong message to other employees that a violation of regulations is not a severe and punishable action.     Everything starts with a baby’s first words, laughs, and experiences. Eventually, they begin their first steps and first thoughts, but their simplicity in life slowly unravels and as they mature they begin to morally develop. This moral growth can be charted with psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg’s Theory of Moral Development. In his theory, Kohlberg describes six stages in which a person can be classified in. In Kohlberg’s Theory of Moral Development there are six stages which a person can be categorized based on how a person makes decisions. For example, stage one in his Theory of Moral Development, is when a person makes decisions based on fear of punishment not because it would hurt them, much like a child thinking about touching something hot who would avoid it because they would be yelled at or punished by a parent not because they would get burned. Next, stage two is where a person makes decisions based upon what they will receive in return. However, a person who makes decisions based upon peer pressure or makes decisions to please someone that person would be placed in stage three. A person in stage four makes decisions based on their “black and white” view on law. Furthermore, stage five is when a person makes decisions not based merely on law but for the benefit of a group of people. Lastly, stage six is similar to stage five; however it is not only for the benefit of a group of people but for the betterment of mankind and will risk anything including their lives to do so. Examples of this moral development can be found in the novel The Samurai’s Garden by Gail Tsukiyama. In the novel, Stephen is a young man who is diagnosed with tuberculosis and leaves his home in Hong Kong to go to his deceased grandfather’s beach house in Tarumi, Japan.
