In 1926, a French steamboat, the S.S. Lotus, slammed into a Turkish steamboat, the Botz-Kourt. This brought about the sinking of the Turkish watercraft and the demise of eight Turkish nationals. Turkish powers (offended parties) founded criminal procedures against the French officer on obligation on board the S.S. Lotus at the season of the crash, Lieutenant Demons (litigant).
