In the 1940s the United States was getting ready to get involved in World War II and needed to set an example of good ethics on a global stage to help bring. The book The Boys of Pointe Du Hoc written by, Douglas Brinkley has many examples of ethical decision making that was critical at the time in order for the United States to bring peace to World War II. For instance the author is re-establishing already known information but with a new style of how he obtained the information, which was straight from the sources of D-day survivors. With the decision to tell the story of D-day through the quotes of survivors it helps show how the army generals and rangers would act showing their ethnicity toward the United States and helping resolve World…

War brings death and destruction, merciless slaughter and butchery, disease and starvation, poverty and ruin in its wake. Although war may not always be the first answer or the most beneficial, it is an inescapable evil because war has brought the world peace and prosperity while banding people together to fight for a cause. It leads to national growth and solves domestic problems between countries; Injustice and tyranny can be quelled as the aftereffect of war. On the contrary, war includes loss of human life, spreads of diseases, and induces a feeling of anxiety and dismay among communities. The brutal sacrifices that innocent people undergo may not be worth the outcome.…
The short stories “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst and “My Brother’s Keeper” by Jay Bennet are both realistic examples of family dynamics and how they can affect the way siblings treat each other. “The Scarlet Ibis” demonstrates how older siblings tend to feel the need to assist or help their younger siblings in things they cannot do, often leaving the younger siblings codependent on the older siblings for everything. In comparison, “My Brother’s Keeper” demonstrates how trauma can lead to siblings leaching to each other and becoming reliant, more often one more than the other. Even when two people are not siblings but are close, one person can become codependent on the other, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is the prime example of this.…
The poem ‘Migrants by ‘Bruce Dawe ’should be included for the core text for journeying as it portrays journeying through the perceptions and experiences of a migrant group. This poem depicts feelings of ignorance and disrespectfulness encountered by the migrant group as they are treated with a lack of concern by people living in Australia.…
Bruce Dawe's poem, Migrants, portrays a long quest from the perception of a migrant group. The particular group is acknowledged as “they” as they were met with indifferences from the locals. “They” reacted to this treatment with surprise and confusion which is made evident in the line, “indifference surprised them..” which creates a sense of ambiguity and lack of identity. This mystified poem depicts feelings of ignorance as well as disinterest as “they” are treated with a lack of concern.…
Death of the Ibis Death is a sad mournful thing, but many short story's use death as one of the story's plot points like the short story "The Scarlet Ibis" by James Hurst. Hurst uses death and sadness to give this story its realism and not have it be a flat boring story. "The last graveyard flowers were blooming, and their smell drifted across the cotton field and through every room of our house, speaking softly the names of our dead. " My ideas are why hurst worded it this way is because he wanted it to feel sad and unpleasant, but most of all depressing.…

In the book Our Kids the author, Robert Putnam, believes that the increased gap between the wealthy and poor is what causes the differences in school quality and opportunities for the students (Putnam, 2015). Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing two of today’s youth, Josh and Erin. Their names have been changed for the sake of anonymity. Josh is a 17-year-old student at Shawnee Mission East High School, in Prairie Village, Kansas.…
The ordeal that a soldier experiences during a war is often unshakable, haunting both memories and the current happenings in one’s life. In the beginning of The Things They Carried, by Tim O’Brien, O’Brien describes the lasting turmoil both he and Lieutenant Jimmy Cross feel as a result of the war: “... Jimmy rubbed his eyes and said he’d never forgiven himself for Lavender’s death. It was something that would never go away, he said quietly, and I nodded and told him I feel the same about certain things” (26). The tragedies of war can never be understood by one who has not experienced it, and soldiers must overcome the mental barricade of fitting back into an unknowing society when returning from duty. At times, this mental barricade, combined with the…
