Mr. Mears is the young Priest who accompanied Kezia on her journey to meet the man she was arranged to marry, Mr. Hathaway. Mr. Mears was shy and kept to himself. "She looked at the preacher and saw how young and helpless he looked so far from his native Yorkshire and how ill-clad for this bitter trans-Atlantic weather and she spoke up."
Mr. and Mrs. Barclay
Kezia was an orphan house keeper to Mr and Mrs Barclay. They were wealthy however, they portrayed themselves to be much more wealthier than they actually were. They often snorted drugs to keep themselves acting more uptight and stuck up. "But Mr. Barclay had taken a snuff and said 'Ha! Humph!' in the severe tone he used when he was displeased; and Mrs. Barclay had sniffed and said it was a very good match for her, and revlolved the cold blue eyes in her fat moon face and said Kezia must not be a little fool."
Mr. Hathaway
Mr. Hathaway was Mr. Barclay's agent at Bristol Creek. He sold rum, corn meal and gunpowder to fisherman and hunters, he also ran a sawmill and cut and shipped firewood. Mr Hathaway was wealthy and was well aware of it, he also enjoyed the company of younger women. "Mr. Hathaway was nearly forty and far from handsome, and he had a rather cold, seeking way about him - useful in business - that rubbed women the wrong way. Privately Mr. Barclay thought Hathaway lucky to get Kezia."
Kezia Barnes
Kezia Barnes is an orphan house keeper to the Barclay family. She has an arranged marriage with Mr. Hathaway however she does not want to marry him, she later realizes she would rather marry Mr. Mears, the young reverend. Kezia is a smart girl who would rather be happy and alone then unhappy and married. "Kezia did not want to marry Mr. Hathaway. Indeed she had told Mr. and Mrs. Barclay in a tearful voice that she didn't want to marry anybody."
