We are use to say that a girl’s best friend is a diamond, but where does these diamonds come from and do they really just cost a high amount of money? Here in Sweden a diamond ring with a 0.30 ct stone could cost up to 18.000kr. Most of us are ready to pay this price to show our love to our partner. But I do not think as many are ready to pay with a human life. Most of the diamonds does come from war-torn areas in Africa. Could it be any connection, it is war in 90% of the countries that produce diamonds? I would say yes and would even go further with that answer and say, it is our fault!
In Sierra-Leone there are 480,000 people that work in the rivers every day to find diamonds that end up on our necks our fingers, these people does not get a single penny for finding these shiny things. If a person does not find a diamond throughout the day this often leads to this person’s death. If I got all this right, a person needs to risk its life to make a wedding in Europe possible. There is a time in our history where diamonds was used only to protect the humans from evil stuff. 1 3000 years ago the very first diamonds were found in India, diamonds was seen as light reflectors, the humans became smarter and smarter and some years later diamonds were used as medicine. Nobody needed to die, diamonds used to save lives.
Instead of saving lives, diamonds is a multinational million deal between western countries. But what if it only was a business that generated millions? It generates millions in cash and millions in human lives. The most of thinks like (excuse my language) idiots. We say “If I buy a diamond that comes from a war-torn area in Africa, it is not my responsibility it is the sellers”. My answer to that is would you buy a gun to a robber? The Answer is evident, but what if I pronounce it this way; if a robber were selling a car and he was going to buy a gun for the money, would you then buy the car
