The narrator immersed himself in the ocean to escape from his past; he is still dealing with the death of his son and guilt that he was one that killed his own flesh and blood. While in the ocean the narrator briefly describes his swimming technique, he states that he enjoys the feeling of swimming harder underneath the current. He pushes himself harder in the ocean to the point he grasp the concept that in just a matter of seconds a body can easily die as live. Swimming in the ocean with the narrator were jellyfishes and a whale shark. The significant about the whale shark, is it was once alive in the ocean swimming freely than suddenly captured and killed. Whale Talk is a book of many themes. Some of those themes are “Don’t Give Up”, “Independence”, “Abuse”, “Love”, “Happiness”, and “Teamwork”. “Don’t Give Up” is an example of the theme because even though TJ’s dad turns to suicide and drugs in order to cope with the accident, he still decides to take that experience to help out children in need. Another theme is “Independence” because in chapter 15, Kristin Sweetwater finally breaks up with Mike Barbour and actually sticks with the breakup.…

One of the rarest mammals the Right Whale faces near extinction. At about 50 feet long they roam through Atlantic or Pacific waters. “Right whales live in temperate and cool seas in both hemispheres at the surface of the ocean. Southern right whales live at latitudes between 20°-55° but will occasionally venture down to 63°.” (Col). Or some species of Right Whale such as the Black Right Whale may live in all of the oceans. They travel very often but swim at a very low speed about 3 miles per hour.…

Captain Ahab’s great white whale brings him destruction in the famous “Moby Dick”, but actual whales glide graceful and effortless through the ocean almost all of time. After the white whale in “Moby Dick”, there is perhaps no whale more well known among enthusiasts and scientists alike than Migaloo the white humpback whale. The details of the quote show how frightened and cold and lonely these men were. The author included the sharks to represent the constant and very real threat of death and the problem of survival against these unlikely odds. The description of the ocean as calm relates to the situation like the calm before a storm in the sense that these men’s time on those rafts was likely the lesser of all evils that they had to endure from the day of the crash to the day they were liberated. Overall, the author chose to detail this setting because it gives depth and adds slight drama to the situation rather than just telling the reader that it was cold and there were sharks.…

Carcharhinus Leucas or bull sharks are the only species of sharks that are able to travel long distances and spend extended periods of time in freshwater environments. Although many people disagree, I believe that one of the bull sharks’ main reason for entering freshwater is to find breeding grounds. There is evidence that supports this theory, and it seems to me a very logical explanation, however it is a controversial concept. In this paper, I will discuss what physical characteristics allow bull sharks to survive in both marine and fresh waters, and attempt to understand whether they do this…

The memory, as she describes, was of a day she had as a child when she went whale-watching with her parents and brother. She narrates the beginning of the day as an uneventful family outing where they had a mediocre lunch and were unsuccessful at spotting any whales. However, eventually they see a mother “humpback” whale and her “calf”, and this is when the woman begins to use this memory as an association to her present sorrows. The woman observes the two whales and illustrates her experience, “The mother left her head underwater but I felt that I knew her more than I had ever known. I knew the curious joy she took in the vastness of the ocean.” This passage is important as she later uses the grandness and all that is unknown about the ocean as a symbol to represent the ambiguity and obscurity that comes with…

With research and studies being conducted on both wild and captive Killer Whales, data and information has been generated that adds question to the health issues associated with captivity. “The killer whale (Orcinus orca) has proven to be among the most difficult of all species to hold adequately in zoological facilities. The killer whale is a particularly large-brained and long-lived species who evidences a high degree of social complexity in the wild.” (Noonan) Their behavior and relationships with other whales within the family, known as a pod, creates an immense bond between the animals. Whales that were documented inhabiting the Pacific Northwest, remain in their natal group for most, if not all, of their life. (Robeck) When in captivity,…

Rob Stewart claims in the beginning of the film; “he loves ocean when he was a little, and the shark is his favorite animal on earth.” He hates that how people are impacted by the mass media. “Sharks are bad animal!” “Sharks are fierce animal!”-- These statements are delivering a message from the movie “Jaws”. Jaw might be the most successful movie in 1970s, but it also defines the stereotype of the sharks. In certain degree, the fear of sharks will turn to hate. People all have their sympathy on panda, and elephant, because they are described as lovely animals. How about sharks? Could you imagine that when people accuse you as a murderer, but you are not? The same situation likes the sharks; Sharks cannot defense for itself, and they can only suffer the misunderstanding made by human. Rumor would not be sufficient to eliminate any animal, but the profits would. The heart broken images in the film about how sharks are killed are overwhelming moment. Their fins are removed easily, and then their body is dumped back to ocean. The sharks without fins just like human lost function of breath. The camera captures an image that a helpless fin removed shark sink into the dark ocean lonely. How could fishermen kill those harmless sharks by such inhuman method? Author has significant…

To start with, this story is full of sea imagery. The story starts off with children playing on a beach and notices something floating about in the sea. When the object eventually floats upun the shore, the children immediately starts to play with it. The object is described as a whale, a ship, and then a nasty sea monster. When Estebans body floated upon shore they removed the seaweed, jelly fish tentacles, and the remains of fish. We were told that he had the smell of the sea about him. The women of the town used a sail to make him a shirt. The women also stated that if he were alive “he would have had so much authority that he could have drawn fish out of the sea by simply calling their names”. Later within the story, the women imagine “his soft pink sea lion hands” as he “stretched out like a sprem whale”. This drowned man is clearly known as an object of the sea. He comes from the sea in the beginning and eventually ends up back in the sea. The relationship of the drowned man to the sea initiates his role as a supernatural mythical creature that didn’t belong on earth as a human being.…

Beluga whales are one of the smallest species of whales. These whales are one of the two members of the Monodontidae family, along with the narwhal. This whale is sometimes referred to as the “sea canary” due to it’s high pitched squeak. This whale has adapted to life in the Arctic. It has developed many characteristics to help it with living in this cold water. It’s body has a high percentage of blubber to help keep it warm. These whales can weigh up to 3,500 pounds. These whales have also developed a special kind of hearing called echolocation, which helps it to find blowholes under the sheet of ice in the Arctic. Most beluga whales live on a diet of fish, crustaceans, squid, octopus, crabs, sand worms, and other small prey. They consume on average,…
