Dr. Sayer informed Leonard that he was going to stop the dosages being given for a series of tests that needed to be run. The Yellow Wallpaper written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman explores the oppression of women in the nineteenth century and how this led to the limitation of freedom, leading to confinement of many women during this time. It illustrates the male superiority over the female and the elimination of a voice and a say for these women regarding their own lives. The short story is structured to appear a bit creepy and horrific, but within this method the author created a strong female character who, even though is slowly deteriorating psychologically, is trying to fight the pressure that society in the nineteenth century is placing on her and also the pressure of her own husband. The style that the author was trying to create is clear through her use…

While there is plenty of evidence for Kipling’s racism and imperialism in both Kim and White Man’s Burden, there is more to the story than simple labels can describe. In Kim Kipling’s descriptions of native Indians is both curious and compassionate, the Indian characters are more interesting than the English. Kim’s character himself was born, like Kipling, in India under British rule and through the story Kim struggles between the culture of India and his British heritage. In the end, although Kim was raised almost solely by Indians in an Indian culture, he is still inherently full of imperialist tendencies that Kipling describes in The White Man's Burden. This is possibly descriptive of Kipling’s own views, in that he appreciated the…

Foreshadowing is to show or indicate beforehand. Most authors use foreshadowing as a tool to let the reader see what is going to happen in the future. Often times, readers take foreshadowing for granted, taking the tiny hints left by authors as actual indications of what’s to come. Authors like D.M. Thomas, use this implied notion to catch their readers off guard and evoke emotion with the unexpected. Adding fiction to history, Thomas does this perfectly in his novel The White Hotel. After several years of pain in her breast and ovary, main character Lisa Erdman seeks the help of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. Early on in the story, incredibly unique images like breast, the crucifix, and luggage portray Lisa, who is called Anna in the first the chapters of the book, as psychotic sexually driven woman. The reader sees a one dimensional girl at first. As the images develop, the reader begins to see that Lisa is more than her disturbing dreams lead her on to be. In his book The White Hotel, author D.M. Thomas flawlessly incorporates and connects the images and themes of sex, religion, and disturbing predictions, to foreshadow and progressively leave hints to his reader. These hints unveil the complexity of Lisa and prove that human life is more than a title like “Jew”, but a beautiful complex system in which everyone is worthy of living a life unrestricted by simple minded thinking.…
