The Canterbury Tales was written in the late 1380's. The Wife of Bath was a strange woman for her time period. Most women in this time frame had no say in marriage, and mostly stayed with one man. The Wife of Bath wasa woman who was on the pilgrimage to Canterbury and a woman who told her story.
The Wife of Bath's apperance say a lot about her personality, and her sexuality. In Chaucer's days gapped teeth were looked at as a sign of being promiscous. She has had five husbands, and first got married at the very young age of 12. She has a wide set of hips and was mentioned as being handsome which made lovers come very easy to her. She was a very well dressed woman which also says a lot about her character. In The Wife of Bath's prologue she came off as a snob. She has money and dresses nice, kind of seems like she sits on a high horse. …show more content…
Her personality is different from a average woman of her time.
Women of this time period were mostly quiet and let the husband take lead of the marriage. She was very mouthy. She spoke her mind if she did not agree with someone's opinion or if she did not agree with their statement. She again was a very wealthy woman. She traveled numerous of times and went to a numerous amount of places. Traveling was expensive then just as it is expensive now. She has traveled to Jerusalem 3 times, Spain, Italy, France, and Germany. I would have to assume that she knew more than one langauge also. The Wife of Bath loved to socialize and laugh. She probably made friends on her travels because of this trait. She very much loves the attention of men, she loves the sexual attention to be specific. She assumes that she is an expert at sex, and marriage. The five marriages she has been in she has out lived every single one of her husbands. This probably does not bother her because she enjoys looking for new
husbands.
The Wife of Bath's motives are strange in a way. All this woman wants in a man is money except for her last marraige which she actually married for love but what was strange about it is that she met this man at her husbands funeral, she wanted for him to surrender the lead role in the marriage and to let her take full control. The men that she eventually lured in were more than likely attracted to her sexually more than anything. She has had a lot of experience with sex, and considered herself an expert. She eventually manipulated them enough to make them give her everything she wanted. There is a story about her and one of her husbands. Her husband read women's rights books in front of her to aggitate her and she hit him in the head and made him fall into the fire. He then hit her and knocked her out and she threated to tell everyone if he did not give her everything she ever desired.
The WIfe of Bath was a very versatile character and a very known character. She was unique by her personality and the way she lived life. She was different from everyone and that is why she stood out.
