Abstract
This research proves that Edilberto K. Tiempo uses local color in his short fictions and be called a Filipino local colorist. This analyzes the fictional elements and style contributing to local color. It also looks into his biographical synthesis as a local colorist, elements of local color and fictional style. It uses discourse analysis, hence a qualitative research that generates verbal data. Edilberto K. Tiempo is a local colorist because he is a realist, a reflector of human figure in a landscape, renders life with authority, and draws idea from personal experiences. The setting is of local color since they are located in the rural area. The names and personality of the characters are known locally. The Plot used is Aristotelian Plot Structure, common to all Local Color stories. The themes are superstitious beliefs and social justice. The uses of local words that cannot be translated to English are very evident. Regional realities that are unique to the locality are found in the selected short stories. The character behavioral patterns of the characters in the stories are obviously found nationally. It is confirmed that E.K. Tiempo’s short fictions reveal the dominant use of local color. His background and experiences to create the local color atmosphere reflect in his stories. Through the use of the right elements of fiction, further proves that EK Tiempo is a local colorist. It is recommended that the author’s background be looked into especially the experiences about the outback, a deeper look into the elements of a fiction should be done and attention be given emphasis on the fictional style as reflective to local color, the practices and the duplication of a regional behavior that is true to other regions are essential part to determine that a certain story is on local color.
