Intertextuality suggest that all works of literature are in some way connected and are telling the same story, but in different viewpoints. Whether the author is aware or not, they are influenced from other works. It could be from a song heard, a movie seen, or a book read, but the author will in some way intertwine other works within their writing consciously or not. In Susan Glaspell’s short story “A Jury of Her Peers” and Helen Reddy’s song “I Am Woman”, intertextuality is not necessary evident, however, you can derive the same meanings from the two. While Glaspell may be unaware of her message of the empowerment of women, especially being that the story was written in 1917, Reddy’s is quite clear.…
Hillary Clinton and Jane Addams both saw a need for labor reform nearly one hundred years apart. Clinton and Addams’s progressive ideas are similar in which they want all workplaces to be safe for the employees, a day’s wage to increase in order to satisfactorily provide for employees families, and a stable future for when the workers reach retirement. Jane Addams drew her focus on child labor. The industrial revolution brought the concept of child labor. Children were working in places such as mills and factories, with unhealthy working conditions and little to no wages. Addams was strongly against child labor and it’s abuse and at the 1903 annual meeting of the National Conference of Charities and Corrections, she stated that, “…It has come…
Childhood is the most carefree part of a person's life. Children are instinctively pure creatures, unperturbed by the troubles that may surround them. Like the quote above states, the incidents they go through are simply black and white, good and bad. However, as they grow older, they lose their innocent state of mind. They are suddenly thrown into a world where they are constantly struggling to defeat the odds and are desperately seeking answers to life's questions. Is there anyone that helps them during this difficult time, to see the "shades of gray?" Of course, there can be many answers to this question, but I think the single most influential person who guides a child through this stage is a family member. Family is one of the most important factors that help shape a person's life. In the critically lauded and moving tales of "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee and "Bless Me, Ultima" by Rudolfo Anaya, the protagonists are all children, newly thrust into the world, faced with extreme obstacles and situations that test their character. Each one deals with these obstacles in different ways because of their different personalities. However, one thing is certain--the main characters of both novels overcome their hurdles and develop a strong level of morality along the way because they are guided by the love, understanding, and experience of their family members.…
Joyce Carol Oates uses characterization and the coming of age effectively in “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been”, “Four Summers”, and “The Girl with the Blackened Eye”. She uses it to connect the three stories to each other. Connie and the girl in “The Girl with the Blackened Eye” are connected because they were both violated by a man. Connie and Sissie were both connected because they were both influenced by their families’ ways on how they lived their lives.…

A road movie consists several characteristics. Starting off with the idea of an escape, Thelma and Louise were persistent in embarking their fishing trip journey as a sense of liberation from the domineering and uncommitted men in their lives. The scene where Darryl told Thelma he does not care about special dinner and might not be home for dinner clearly shows how Darryl is dominant over Thelma, causing Thelma to be scared of asking her husband’s permission for the trip. Whereas when Louise’s received an answering machine instead of a pick-up from Jimmy denotes that Jimmy is not fully committed to Louise.…
Miss Emily in “A Rose for Emily” and Calixta in “The Storm” may have their differences, but I am here to show you that people from different eras, places, or cultures can still have plenty of things in common. Virginia Woolf the writer of “The Death of a Moth” and Alexander Petrunkevich the writer of “The Spider and the Wasp” have many differences and similarities in their writing. From gangsters to scriveners, throughout this class Losers In Literature, we have encountered and discussed all types of characters. Ikiru is a 1952 Japanese film directed by Akira Kurasawa. Ikiru or ‘to live’ is the story of a bureaucratic man who faces a terminal diagnosis. Kanji Watanabe, the protagonist played by Takashi Shimura, is perhaps the most impactful and persuasive character that we have experienced. This black and white film has won numerous awards for its powerful story and charismatic acting. Ikiru, viewed as political cinema, came into film during a time of Japans post war reconstruction and was seen to call for a new understanding of culture and self-awareness. This is an analytical review of the film Ikiru and an interpretation of the techniques used to build such a profound and moving character.…

“The Glass Menagerie” and “A Raisin in the Sun” are about families with different backgrounds and are placed in different eras of American history. In “A Raisin in the Sun,” an African-American family struggles with keeping faith with their dreams and remaining optimistic. “The Glass Menagerie,” parallels to “A Raisin in the Sun,” with the family being Caucasian-American, struggling also to survive and to climb towards a better future. Despite the two families differences in background and eras, there are many connections between their economic, social, and individual scenarios. Each is a family of three dealing with poverty and with the absence of a father in the household. “The Glass Menagerie,” features Amanda…
