When I graduated from high school, I met a girl who would soon become the mother of my child. My daughter, Samiya Jordan, was born June of 2006. She is the most precious gift I’ve ever had. When she was only a year old, she was involved in a car accident that claimed the life of my soon to be wife, D’Juna Thomas. D’Juna was a very good friend of mine and also the love of my life. She was only 18 years of age when she passed away. I gain my strength to move on push forward by none other than the almighty King of kings. I continued to seek peace in my heart by attending church regularly, and helping out when needed. My family was a big support system in my life at that time, and the fact that my daughter was so strong to survive such a tragedy gave me the strength and motivation I needed to work hard, keep striving, and to never give up. This is my life in a quick summary, but for you to get to know me by reading up on me, it would take way more pages.

Hi, my names Valerie and I was born November 1st, 2000 at 1:30pm in New Westminster, British Columbia. Although, after almost six years of living in BC my Mom decided it was best my sister, Jennifer, her and I all move to Calgary, Alberta. We lived there for about a year, then we moved to the Okanagan in British Columbia, then back down to Surrey. I’m thankful I never moved outside of Canada because living in Canada means freedom, plus everyone's so nice. Anyway, after all that moving you would think I attended multiple schools and I did. I attended Rosscarrock Elementary, Holly Elementary, M.V Beattie Elementary, Mary Jane Shannon Elementary and last but not least Guildford Park Secondary up until now. Seeing how I went to so many schools I got to experience different ways of…

Not very long ago, my parents were on the edge of divorce mainly due to the fact that my father was consumed by alcohol which played a major role in his way of thinking. He sat my siblings and I down and explained he was ready to call it quits. As days went on it was obvious to me that I would have to be the one to stand up and speak my mind out of us siblings. So I did. I was very anxious that speaking my mind would do nothing but make me look like a fool, but I knew in my heart that I had the ability to stitch this broken family together. As a result, he and my mother worked things out and are back on track thanks to having the courage to be a family…

My family shaped my entire life. Yet, so did I. I went down a road that many do not travel on until they are teenagers or in their early twenties. I was born in Hayward, Ca. and lived there for about twelve years. In those twelve years, I went through a lot. I went to Palma Ceia Elementary School, constantly getting into trouble every day. My mother had been told by many teachers that I would never pass the sixth grade, let alone go to college.…

One scene in The Known World depicts an odd event. While many scenes show brutality, injustice, humility, and love, a small scene where one slave is good to his master carries a different message. This section of the novel explores a relationship of two characters that are arguably unimportant. I would not say that the novel needs these two characters to be a success. The slave or master alone does not play a major role in the plot, but together they display a profound message. It is for this reason that makes this short sub chapter intriguing. If these two characters have such a little impact on creating this story and an impact on others, than why are these particular persons here? Edward P. Jones writes about a relationship of a master and a slave that has grown strong, and though the relationship is bound with nothing but obedience and gratitude, the security of the relationship has made the master weary. Here Jones illustrates how the master, Clara, and the slave, Ralph, have created their own world blurring the line of separation between master and slave.…

As soon as I was born, my life was in jeopardy. Ever since then I’ve been fighting to keep up, and now I am thankfully completely healthy. I have pictures of myself lying next to a small pillow, and somehow the green and white checkered cushion was twice my size. That’s what happens when you’re born months early and averaging four pounds. Since then, I’ve had four major surgeries and have used my resilience to push myself forward as I continue to be involved in activities in and out of school. I learned that instead of not doing anything and feeling sorry for myself, I had to be proactive. So I gained self-confidence, unwavering drive, and maintained a kind heart no matter what life threw at me. Because one day, after overcoming obstacles trying to bring you down, there will be a happy ending and the light-up shoes that’ll make everything worth…

Life began for my son spending his first few weeks of life in a NICU as they call it in the hospital with incubators and feeding tubes combined with the constant care from doctors and nurses assigned to his care. How traumatic for both mother and child to experience the separation and disconnect that is being substituted by machines. I forced the hospital to allow me an opportunity to stay in a room so that I could be as close to my son as I could. I was there for every feeding, every diaper change, all the testing I would sit in the NICU beside his bed and sing to him to reassure him that I was there. I was determined to be with my child as much as…

My mother kept her rental property and worked hard to give her children a good life, but adversity soon visited my life again. When I was in the sixth grade my mother lost her rental property and her hours at work dramatically slowed down. Things were slowly but surely changing. This is when I started to let adversity get the best of me. In school I always was talkative and got in a little trouble from time to time, but I knew when to stop. I was developing a nasty ‘’ I do not care’’ attitude, authority did not mean as much as it used to. I gradually started getting into more and more trouble. My behavior put more unneeded stress on my mother. It would have been easy to just blame my behavior on the lost of my father, but over time, I realized that the world does not stop for anyone. There are just some things you have to learn from and then move on. I believe God put all these circumstances in my life for a reason. He blessed my mother with a better job, and he also changed me. I started to understand what responsibility is. He blessed me to go to a high school where I could learn more about him. If I did not attend my high school I probably would not see the blessing in my adversity. Now I am not completely over the loss of my father, but I strive for success not only for me, but for him also. I have real motivation I can see every day…

I believe that the rest of my story might vary slightly from others, starting at a very early age. As my little sister was born just 2 years after me, our lives took a dramatic change. She was born without a pulmonary artery which demanded immediate open heart surgery and weeks and months of subsequent hospitalization. In spite of all doctor's prognoses, she became a miracle. Even in my early years I remember the first night she came home, wrapped in a Christmas blanket. The challenges issued by her health then and in following years were a proving ground for my family, and as a result the rule of my family and my life has been, "Family First".…
