the world is an increasingly place to live in true or
The world is an increasingly dangerous place to live in.

It seems that everyday we are hearing more and more stories of murder, kidnapping and terrible crimes; but is the world really getting more dangerous?

I believe the media has a vital role to play in this picture with the arrival of 24-hour news channels and live news feeds; it seems we are constantly being bombarded with horrific incidents, giving the false illusion that crime is rising at the same rate as well. We look back to the First World War, with the millions of casualties and mass destruction which was not reported back to England in the same way that it would be if it was taking place now; so people had a different perspective and saw the war as something completely different to the actual reality. There is paranoia amongst people that they are more likely to get murdered or assaulted today, because the news reports on killings and assaults dominates the headlines. The truth being they are less likely to be a subject of crime than fifty years ago. Terrorism is also a word used a lot in recent years; it sparks fear in a lot of people especially because the media have created an image that all of the Muslim race are a part of Al Qaeda something we are all in danger of apparently. People believe they are in danger when the reality is terrorism has been occurring for centuries with the IRA spanning most of the 1900s and the KKK that began in the mid 19th century. Really you are in no more danger now than you would have been centuries ago when it comes to terrorism. In fact, with security now becoming increasingly tight, you will find yourself even safer, because even twenty years ago they didn’t have the security checks and thorough searches that now exist.

This leads on to my next point, being the state and legal system that is run in this day and age. People are constantly hounding the police force for doing a terrible job when the reality is far from it. The police in our era now work to protect us extremely well and of course they don’t stop all crime, but the detective work and response team is incredible, for example. Even in places of poverty the police system does more than catch the odd criminal – it deters people, of course not everyone, but quite a vast percentage which makes me feel personally very safe in the current world. Look to the riots of just a few years ago – many people criticized our nation for allowing it to happen when really I look upon it and see the amazing clean up afterwards and the many arrests. China in the 20s and 30s was in a state of anarchy with rioting type behaviour completely widespread – the dealing of the riots only comforts me more in my knowledge that the world is not increasingly more dangerous.

Great read Akeena. I agree that people tend to go with the media's opinion rather it's right or wrong. People tend to form their opinion right after they hear what the media displays. Consequently , the second people form their opinion, they will post it on social media and then people will add to and take away. However, I do feel as though we have good officers that will sacrifice their life for the public, and then we have those that seem to waste our taxpayers money by being low down and corrupt. Therefore, I chose to be part of the solution by contributing my time and effort in getting our crime toll down, and help gain the support and respect from the public.…

With times changing and individuals obtaining more powerful mobile, almost every move a person makes can be recorded or looked back on in some sort of way. With this great power, comes great scrutiny for not only everyday individuals, but for the individuals that protect us day in and day out. Law enforcement has suffered more scrutiny, and has obtained a substantial amount of media coverage over the past few years. This coverage has not been positive, and often highlights the mistakes, and aggressive actions taken by the officers of the law. With the framing of police officers changing from being outstanding citizens who uphold the law, to vicious animals who abuse their power, one begins to question the reasoning for all the brutality.…
