The World is Flat
Analysis of Video “The World is Flat”
Key issues or Problems in the video:
The title "The World is Flat" was taken from a statement by Nandan Nilekani, the former Infosys (an Indian IT company) CEO. It seems like if hadn't met Nandan then he wouldn't have even written this book.
He talks about Americans and the developing world but says almost nothing about Africa, Europe & Australia.
The World is flat applies better to people with similar kind of economic conditions. In developing world, a big portion of population is poor or much below poverty line as per American standard. Their first challenge is access to food and Education. How could they be part of level playing field and make this world flat.
Friedman says first that Nineteenth century belonged to English, Twentieth Century to USA and Twenty first Century to China. Friedman argues that latest age of globalization will be spearheaded by Individuals. He just made this assumption after meeting the cab driver in Budapest & Peruvian Dishware seller who have their own websites. The percentage of people doing their own business like this is still extremely low to claim that the era belongs to them. It feels like an exaggeration. Its conflicting that on one hand, he says 21st century belongs to China and on the other hand, he says latest age of globalization (which is now) will be spearheaded by Individuals. I can’t accept his methods and question his research and interview process.
Friedman is stating something without actually based on real documented facts, but on talks with friends and CEOs he visits. By what it leaves out, it does nothing more than misinform the people around the World.
In the end, he talks about Green New Clean energy which kind of feel out of context from the main topic.
Critique of video, Supporting arguments, rebuttals of ideas:
I think there is a lot to criticize about the Video “The World is Flat”.
Friedman's view of the globalized world is often obsessed with the

This is a presentation about Tom Friedman’s book, called The World is Flat. Tom Friedman is a New York Times reporter and columnist who has won three Pulitzer Prizes and has had four or five bestselling books out. He gets some criticism for this book because some people think he’s a cheerleader for Globalization, and those people who are against Globalization don’t particularly like that. I think, in all fairness to Tom, although he’s very enthusiastic about his book and his subject, I think he just recognizes that, like it or not, Globalization is here, and here to stay. So maybe we need to understand it and figure out what we need to do about it, whether we think it’s good, or bad.…

During the course of his interview with Phil Donahue it was hard to tell from time to time who’s show it was. Friedman has an ease with responding to hard questions, never skipping a beat, giving clear concise answers that are easily understood. At the time of the interview he was in his retirement teaching at the Hoover Institute at Stanford University where he was a Professor of Economics. The main theme throughout the interview is Friedman’s aversion to the government’s involvement in the lives of Americans and in business. Chrysler was petitioning for a government by hiring lobbyist to help orchestrate their bailout wanting in the…

In Friedman's book, "The World Is Flat" he explains many reasons as to why he believes the world is "flat". Flat meaning connected, no boundaries,or no blockages. He believes the world has slowly been flattening due to certain events/actions which he calls "flatteners." I believe some flatteners had a greater impact on globalization in the world than others. An example of one would be flattener #1. Friedman named the first flattener, " 11/9/89 When the Walls Came Down and the Windows Went Up". On November 9, 1989 the Berlin Wall…

In the book Friedman talks about how he means that these three numbers are the specific eras in time that globalization was prevalent. Globalization 1.0 (1492 when Columbus set sail, opening trade between the “Old World” and “New World” until around 1800. This era made the world appear from a large scale to just an average medium scale. The main focus and effect of Globalization 1.0 was the competition between countries over how much muscle, horsepower, wind power, or steam power your country had and how creatively you install and carry this “muscle” out. In this era, countries found inspiration through religion and imperialism. Soon enough time led to the growth of global integration. Globalization 2.0 (around 1800-2000 interrupted by the Great Depression and World Wars). This era shrank the world from the average medium to a very small. The main focus that…

The major theme that is in this documentary is self explanatory which is arguing that the earth is flat. This documentary and our class in my point of view both have a smilier theme. A simple answer is that they both discuss myths. For example in the documentary, Mark discusses that the Earth is flat and tries providing many points of proof and in class we had earlier talked about the Lion Gate in Argolid, Greece. According to Greek mythology, the Lion Gate was built by cyclops because physically it would have been impossible for human men to have raised such heavy stone to create the arch by themselves. A long time ago and still to this day, there is some debate that the Earth may be flat and not round even though there has been plenty of…
