The Worst Experience
The Worst Experience The worst experience I have ever had was my first overnight shift at McDonald’s. The initial aspect of the job that made my experience so negative was the effect the fatigue had on me and my co-workers. Between yawns there was a word or two passed amongst the rest of the staff and myself, often these words were hasty and with a definite hint of attitude. In the process of my struggle through the night, my legs seemed to weigh an additional hundred pounds each as I drudged through the layers of grease accumulated on the floor. In addition to the fatigue, the late night club goers always seemed to transcend their intoxication in order to saturate my nostrils with their liquor stained breath. Furthermore customers in the early morning hours also had a general rude tone to them, especially when their impossible request were denied, most frequently replacing their Big Breakfast sausage with a Quarter Pounder beef patty. In extreme cases there were even violent outbursts from patrons. One time in particular a customer insisting that my manager follows him outside so they could handle the issue of a free apple pie like men. Moreover the overnight shift seemed to be the longest eight hours of my life. Constantly looking over at the clock in between customers, one had to question whether the clock was functioning properly. Upon the sun’s brimming of the horizon there was a general sense of relief among all members of the overnight shift, we had survived the hellacious crowd and hours of the night together. An overall respect had been gained by each of my coworkers from me.

Being a bus boy for this restaurant was probably the most difficult thing to do. Not only did I have to clean tables off, but I also had to sit people down and get their drinks. The bussers had to constantly walk back and forth through the dining area to make sure people got what they wanted. It got real tiring after a while, especially if you weren’t wearing comfortable shoes. At the end of a long day my feet would be killing me, but I guess it was also my fault for not wearing comfortable shoes. Rush hour was never fun, that’s when we had to really hustle around the restaurant and tend to people other wise we weren’t going to have happy customers. I had to clean tables and get them set just as fast so that the people waiting up front could sit down and usually I would have to clean a table by myself during rush hour because the other bussers were either busy or we didn’t have enough bussers which always made me mad because I would have to do double the work in the same amount of time as if there was another busser helping me. It was very stressful and demanding on me, but in my opinion the worst part of being a busser had to be brining dinner tables up and down the basement stairs when we had big parties come in. The tables were big and heavy and the staircase was super narrow and curved. So when we got to the curve the other busser and me had to lift it over our heads to get around the bend and to make things even more difficult there was always stuff on the steps so we had to make sure we didn’t trip over anything. Then came the door, the most challenging obstacle to get through with the…

The managers were good people but when it came to work they seemed to not really care. The shift manager would sit in his office all day eating and watching ESPN on his phone. Our hiring manager tried to be a sales associate, instead of doing the work she was always complaining about. No one would do the inventory so when it did get done everything was off. I would tell the shift manager the days and times I would need off, and for some reason I’d be scheduled for times I requested off weeks prior. When I applied I signed up for “Sales associate” but ended up working cash register. After I quit, I found out that almost everyone got fired and Petsmart is now under new management.…

Managers see People as robots. At first, one can argue that these unskilled entry level jobs are easy, but after working at one, it changed my attitude towards life. It was not so much the busy environment or physical labor that was particularly hard; it was the mental and emotional stress that affected me as an individual. The relationships of managers towards the employees, thus no matter how hard people are working, created very hesitant working environment. With having to do twenty things at a time, it is very mentally draining. Since one of the main priorities was to save labor and not to cut into the profits, people were required to do multiple positions at a time. I remember how insane it was to be an order taker and cashier at the same time during the dinner rush. Besides dealing with costumers, trying to hear what people are ordering through the intercom, and ringing up the order, I had to follow the standard guidelines of greeting, confirming the order, asking for drinks, and saying “Please pull to the window”. While at the same time, I had to greet the customer at the window, say the total, collect the money, ask for sauce, check the items in the bag, tell the customer what’s in the bag, and then “please come again”. After such experience, I do not know how anyone would not attend school to obtain at least some education. Therefore, working there drained all the energy out of me and made me very moody and sensitive because I was always tired. At the end of every shift, I just wanted to come home and hide in the closet while crying myself to sleep because of mental exhaustion. My experience, as a former Taco Bell employee, is a perfect example of capitalism and how it alienates people from the product, self, process and the…

One theory in Jared Diamond s Collapse is that soil degradation and erosion leads to insufficient agriculture and a society s demise. In Timothy Egan s The Worst Hard Time, he sets forth in specific and excruciating detail exactly what Diamond outlines in Collapse. Only Egan s book isn t theoretical. It isn t a survey of what s happened in other countries. It s about the Dust Bowl in the 1930s. It s about what happens, right here in the heart of America, when the land is misused, mistreated, and turns on those who depend on it.…

My first job was horrible. I did not really know how bad those fast food jobs really were until I got my first job. I was a cook at Whataburger. Yes Whataburger in Decatur, the Texas treasure, the Alcatraz of the west, the worst place to work in America. Believe me when I say that Whataburger is the closest thing to hell a human can experience. Maybe not that far, but it is bad. The job was not that bad at first. Everyone would joke around be relaxed, and have a good time. However, Whataburger does something to you. Whataburger sucks your soul out of you in an agonizing process known as “Whataburger’ll do that to ya,” killing you slowly everyday. A variety of factors would contribute to…

    Starbucks a Nightmare

At my Starbucks, we would have one person working each shift. We had three shifts per day, the opening shift, the midday, and the closing shift. With all my luck I got to either open the store, or close the store. I really didn't like opening or closing, but I said to myself, money is money, and I can't go wrong with making money. Another thing that bothered me about my job was the money. My starting salary was only $6.50 per hour, while other Starbucks salaries started at $8.00 an hour. I didn't apply anywhere else, so I guess I was stuck with the job I had for now.…

McDonald’s national hiring day was only one day which they received thousands of application from people in the United States and they were trying to hire 50,000 new people. Crew and management positions were the types of jobs McDonald’s were seeking for. There are 14,000 McDonald’s in the Unites States and the company stated that one of the reasons to hire so many people in one day was to increase the workforce so more of its restaurants could stay open 24 hours a day. (Censky, 2011) Another goal for McDonald’s innovative idea was to promote the image of a job in McDonald’s (Mc Job) as something positive and not as a “bad” job like most people think when it comes to working at McDonald’s. The company stated that around 75 percent of McDonald’s managers and about half of its franchisees began their careers as store workers. McDonald’s would also like to increase the U.S. workforce to 700,000 from its current level of 650,000. (Need a Job? McDonald 's to Hire 50,000, 2011)…

For an overworked and alienated priest, Gerard Manley Hopkins was able to exert an immense amount of creativity during and memorable lines into his poem ‘No worst, there is none.’, as its named in short. Let’s begin the analysis right away at the first half of the first line. Immediately, Hopkins uses assonance with the “o” in “No Worst,…None”, and also alliteration with the “n” in no and none, the first and last words in the opening sentence. The use of these devices makes the sentence very memorable and geometric, yet so far the reader is left unknowing and curious about what it is that there is nothing worse then. There is a pause at the period and then a heavy and tightly packed…

Introduction- It is a typical Monday, school was long and boring and senior year is taking a toll. I have to work after school… Yuck. Daily I find myself wishing I didn’t have to spend another 4 and 1/2 hours working with hot grease and angry customers. Though some days are long and the thought of work is daunting, I honestly wouldn’t have wanted to spend the past few years anywhere else. Most people consider fast food a menial job for unintelligent people, but I have to disagree. Walking into fast food I would have never thought my life could be enriched in so many ways. McDonald's has taught me about life, about myself, and even about who I want…

When I was younger, I was terrified of strangers. I would not talk to anyone who wasn’t family or a close family friend. When extended family came into town, I was very apprehensive. I was very shy and I relied a lot on hiding in my mother’s arms. I wouldn’t even talk to my preschool teachers for a long time, I just cried instead. I refused to talk to anyone at the grocery store or at my sibling’s schools. I do not have any idea as to why I was so timid, it is not like I had a scary traumatizing experience. I was just quiet, but that has definitely changed throughout the years. Now I can strike up a conversation with anyone, and I’m usually the one who won't stop talking. According to my mom, I didn’t really start talking to people until I…

At the beginning of my part-time waitressing position at Isaac’s, I took up more work than I could handle. A Sunday night dinner shift was around the corner, and I was not prepared. Looking back to when I dismissed any forms of constructive criticism or help, I have since realized that accepting advice, taking responsibility, and making changes to my attitude have helped me develop a work ethic where I am more passionate for learning new things. I was still adapting my work environment while also juggling honors and AP school work during my training when my managers instructed me to serve a table on my own for the first time. Furthermore, my newly profound skills at serving have helped a great deal in improving my proficiency at school and everyday life.…
