Abstract:
The article focuses on the real choices of Multinational enterprises (MNE) to enter into China. MNEs agree that entering China is not an option but a strategic necessity for their future. With a fast growing economy that supports a population of 1.3 billion, China is believed to hold promise as both an economic superpower and an enormous market. In spite of their enthusiasm, many MNEs have found that the road to China is hazardous and that it takes more than commitment and superior technology to succeed in the Chinese market. Many MNEs are increasingly unhappy about the conventional approach in entering China forming joint ventures (JVs) with Chinese firms. To avoid the managerial problems of JVs, some have considered wholly foreign-owned enterprises in China. The article systematically examines four major entry modes into China: exporting, JVs , wholly owned subsidiaries and acquisitions and suggests the general benefits and drawbacks of each of these modes. Finally the article also defines the implications of China 's accession into the World Trade Organization (WTO).
