The Yellow Wallpaper Similarities Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” and John Clive’s film “The Yellow Wallpaper” are similar and different in many aspects. The main plot for example, is extremely similar in both versions. John, one of the main characters, is a doctor and tries to help his wife, the narrator, from depression he believes she suffers from. His treatment requires virtually no activity, and that she does nothing at all for several weeks. In order to make this possible, John purchases a large estate, which is isolated and quiet. He is constantly in and out of the house due to his job, so he creates a strict schedule for his wife to abide by. His possessive control over his wife’s actions is apparent in both the short story and film. It is his control that causes his wife to sneak around, for example beginning her secretive journal, which she believes relieves her mind. Clearly, these two people are not meant to be together due to their opposing views. By the end of the story, John had driven Charlotte so mad that he caught her tearing the wallpaper off the wall in her room. The little aspects are what differed between the short story and film. Things like how the house maid acted, different symbolisms, and the intentions of different characters are obvious examples. However, the similarities in John’s character between the short story and film of “The Yellow Wallpaper” are the most important portion in analyzing these two pieces. How he treats his wife, the narrator, and how he is portrayed are the main similarities in his character. Throughout both the film and short story “The Yellow Wallpaper, John is portrayed as the villain, or antagonist. He is viewed in this way because his treatment of the narrator, or his wife, goes terribly wrong. His actions prove that he had good intentions for his wife the entire time, but his controlling

The text the Yellow Wallpaper, by Charlotte Gilman reveals a woman's struggle in a male centric society during the 19th century. After reading the text, it became evident that the story was a feminist text, that describes how the condescending demoralizing attitude of the doctor, belittles the narrators thoughts and the severity of her illness. John is a textbook example of a dominating spouse, he is a husband that essentially has absolute control over his wife. At the start of the story, the narrator talks about how she finds it a little bit weird that such a big house was so cheap so describes it as being "queer", she later goes on and says that "John laughs at me, of course, but one expects that in marriage" (Pg 24). This line indicates…

When I read the passage the Yellow Wallpaper this quote stood out to me as being one of the main quotes: “ If a physician of high standing, and one’s own husband, assures friends and relatives that there is really nothing the matter with one but temporary nervous depression—a slight hysterical tendency—what is one to do? So I take phosphates or phosphites—whichever it is, and tonics, and journeys, and air, and exercise, and am absolutely forbidden to “work” until I am well again. Personally, I disagree with their ideas.”…

While reading the short story, I came across a paragraph that gave me a clue of what the yellow wallpaper meant to her. She talks about how she discovers new findings by the day and therefore it gives her comfort. I think when she finally discovered what it was about the yellow wallpaper that drew her in, she made it her mission to rip it down. As she rips down the wallpaper it could relate to the fact that she has to tear herself apart to be free. She then questions herself, “… if they all [came] out of that wall-paper as [she] did?” (237). It is strange that she finds such frustration and relief from it. This resembles her, herself because she too is trapped into that home, within that room, and not being able to write. She mentions that there are many faces in the wallpaper, which tells me that these faces are women who are in the same position as her. She also says that “there are so many of those creeping women, and they creep so fast” (237). This line describes her situation because she too is creeping on others as she is kept inside. I think the theme in this short story is about how women are not allowed to do certain things and how men are dominant. She wants to be a writer but her husband does not allow that due to her mental illness. Although the narrator has a mental illness, believes that inanimate objects come to life, and that she was trapped in the yellow wallpaper; She makes a point of how women live by men’s rules and how they are limited to the amount of things they are able to do.…

Many things can be said about Charlotte Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper,” such as how this is some form of bildungsroman, or how it is a story of female repression and omission from society. Another, potentially more insightful reading, could come from the psychological field of study and suggest that the narrator suffers from postpartum psychosis or postpartum depression. The things that the narrator says, hints at, does, and explains all points toward one universal truth: postpartum depression.…

The thrill of Christmas eve is followed by a nearly sleepless night full of curiosity and hope. Each and every child lays in bed wondering what will be under the tree on Christmas morning. Most kids have an idea of what might be received because of what was put on the Christmas list but there is always a few gifts not on the list that turn out to be a favorite of the receiver. Then again, there is always that one crazy great aunt that is seen once a decade at family reunions that sends a thoughtful but wacky and usually tacky gift that is laughed at more than used. The gifts received are almost always placed into categories by the child, or any recipient for that matter, the must have presents, the surprise presents, and the off the wall crazy presents.…

There are several theories about realism and fantasy. In which several of them will be discussed in this essay in relation to the short story of Charlotte Perkins Gilman “The Yellow Wall-paper”. This story represent the genre that is on the line between fantasy and realism, since it fits to both genres criteria written by Rosemary Jackson, Ian Watt and Tzvetan Todorov. Also, it can 't be decided (until the very end perhaps) to which genre it belongs to, by most readers, and in particularly by the “ideal reader”. In “Fantasy: the Literature as Subversion” (second chapter) Jackson opens with the original meaning of the word fantasy, which came from Greek, that makes every kind of literature fantastic because it generally means an activity of the imagination. Fantasy is a protean form since it includes every kind of narratives that represent a supernatural world, which makes it difficult to define. Fantasy is about braking the rules of the natural world that we know. This activity happens in “The Yellow Wall-paper” when the narrator, the main character says where the sun is just so -- I can see a strange, provoking, formless sort of figure, that seems to skulk about behind that silly and conspicuous front design. this is her first description of the imprisoned woman inside the wall-paper, and by other, more specific and vivid descriptions she basically describes a supernatural world, since according to her she is being haunted by this woman. By doing so, this story obeys to the idea that: “ a fantasy is a story based on and controlled by an overt violation of what is generally accepted as possibility” (Irwin, p.x “Fantasy: the Literature as Subversion” 2nd chapter page 14) However, the reader may assume that she is insane and she has overdeveloped imagination, bu still, it 's ambiguous because this woman seems reasonable when she says It is an airy and comfortable room as any one need wish,…
