Two short stories that share both similarities and differences are “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner. The similarities and differences between these short stories is evident upon close examination of point of view, symbolism and theme. Both of these stories examine the life of women who live under the thumbs of men. These stories were both written during a time when women were seen as inferior to men. The stories tell about protagonists who both live a recluse lifestyle because of the men around them. “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman tells the story of an unnamed protagonist who suffers from some type of illness that occur after the

She later decayed from the oppression that stole her freedom. The main character in “The Yellow Wallpaper” hung on to her husband because according to her, "it is so hard to talk with John about my case, because he is so wise, and because he loves me so". She depends on him and also fears him too. He took her freedom away and left her mentally worn down too. These stories talk about men who still had old-fashioned beliefs and convictions at a time when the attitudes and beliefs of the world were changing. The women suffered from the way they were treated by the men they were supposed to trust and love. The setting of “A Rose for Emily” is a town made up by Faulkner. It takes place in Jefferson, Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi. It takes place at the county seat of Jefferson. While Faulkner made up the actual town, it can be seen as a typical town in the south around the mid to late eighteen hundreds through the mid nineteen hundreds. This story focuses on the end of the slavery era and the confusion that ensued when that all ended. It also looks at the future generations and how they dealt with the way of life that existed before they were in

"The Yellow Wallpaper," by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, tells the story of a woman's descent into madness as a result of the "rest and ignore the problem cure" that is frequently prescribed to cure hysteria and nervous conditions in women. More importantly, the story is about control and attacks the role of women in society. The narrator of the story is symbolic for all women in the late 1800s, a prisoner of a confining society. Women are expected to bear children, keep house and do only as they are told. Since men are privileged enough to have education, they hold jobs and make all the decisions. Thus, women are cast into the prison of acquiescence because they live in a world dominated by men. Since men suppress women, John, the narrator's husband, is presumed to have control over the protagonist. Gilman, however, suggests otherwise. She implies that it is a combination of society's control as well as the woman's personal weakness that contribute to the suppression of women. These two factors result in the woman's inability to make her own decisions and voice opposition to men.…

Just before the turn of the 19th century, two works were published in 1899, regarding similar topics associated with feminism such as the subordination of women and the importance of their self-expressions in the midst of the subordination. The Yellow Wallpaper and The Awakening are narrated from the point of view of a female protagonist, revealing the difficulties she and other women face due to commonly held views of female inferiority during this time period. With these similarities aside, the two seemingly similar texts differ in how the female protagonists handle their situation of confinement within strict social conventions.…

The protagonist in “The Yellow Wallpaper” struggles throughout the story due to her controlling husband and a woman’s role in society during this time. Her husband John is a physician and it is clear they are upper-middle class as they are able to afford a summer house and have help to cater to their needs. Even if the main character was not suffering from what her husband calls a nervous disorder, her main function would be to maintain a household and raise her children. Since she is deemed unable to do that due to her condition, she ends up being somewhat useless. In addition, during this time period, nervous disorders and similar mental illnesses were virtually unknown conditions. For these types of conditions, doctors often prescribed a ‘rest-cure’ method in order to ‘cure’ the ill woman. The rest-cure method required physical and creative inactivity and virtual isolation from society and the outside world. Since her husband is a ‘brilliant’ doctor who continuously tells her she is sick, the narrator complies with his every instruction and end up completely dominated by her husband. “He is very careful and loving, and hardly lets me stir without special direction.” (Gilman, 1899, p.2) This story touches on several aspects of a woman’s struggle with society. There is the struggle against being an independent woman in society, a woman’s oppression within her own marriage, and how a woman is treated when suffering from a mental illness such as depression.…

William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” is a surprising short story that begins with the funeral of the main character, Emily Grierson. Faulkner uses an anonymous narrator that is considered to be the voice of “the town” and tells the story out of chronological order. The story basically uses the life of Emily Grierson as a symbol for the changes in the South after the Civil War. Faulkner illustrates the South through the use of a series of symbols, such as Emily’s house, hair, and even Emily’s “rose”.…

The story has grown from a remedy to depression to a female defiance to a male society. "A Rose for Emily" takes place in post- civil war Jefferson, a small town in the deep south of the United States. The setting of the story helps illuminate the values of society during that time. Emily's society was built on the beliefs that the white, upper-class citizens were far more superior to everyone else. Being that they were more superior, everyone was held to a higher standard. The people of Jefferson were expected to have prim and proper houses and yards, high morals, and to obey all of the town's laws. While Emily was part of the upper-class, she did not quite fit in to society's cookie cutter mold. Emily's house was an eyesore to the rest of the town, she was said to be dating a gay man who was of the working class, and she did not pay her taxes. The people of the town began to question Emily's sanity because she was not just like…

Characterization refers to the techniques a writer uses to develop characters in the story. In the story ‘A Rose for Emily’, William Faulkner uses characterization to reveal the character of Miss Emily Grierson, the main role. Faulkner’s use of language foreshadows and builds up to the climax of the story. He expresses the content of her character through physical descriptions, through her act, words, and feeling, through the narrator’s direct comments about the character’s nature, and through the actions, words and feelings of the other characters. Faulkner also uses the characterization to examine the theme of the story. His choice of words is descriptive, tying resoundingly into the theme through which Miss Emily Grierson threads herself emblematic of the effects of time and the nature of the old and new. Appropriately, Faulkner starts the story with the death of Miss Emily Grierson (funeral), and he flashes back to the near distant past and leads on to demise of a woman and the traditions of the past she personifies. The characters in this story make the plot exciting to be read and it all come alive. Without the characters role ‘A Rose for Emily’ would be nothing more then a history of a small town in the South, a place called Jefferson. The combination of all the characters is well connected and it makes the story interesting.…
