The Yellow Wallpaper Literary Analysis

Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” was written and published in 1892. The short story takes place in the Nineteenth Century in a large colonial home in the country over the summer in the lives of a married couple. John, the husband, is a physician and is in control of his wife’s treatment and isolates his wife to an upstairs room with yellow wallpaper. In the story, Gilman reveals the wife’s unhappiness and oppression within her marriage. With the Nineteenth Century social issue of inequality of women’s position within conventional marriage, Gilman focuses on how the wife hides her anxieties and suspicions in order to mask her unhappy marriage and her fight with depression.
