The Yellow Wallpaper. Point of view
The Yellow Wallpaper.

1. Consider the writer's decision regarding narrative point of view. Why do you think she chose this point of view over other possibilities? Comment on the problem her choice creates for the realism of the story's end.

I think the author chose the woman's point of view over other possibilities because that makes the story interesting. The perspective allows us to «see» into the woman's mind as her thinking deteriorates. The readers are intrigued from the beginning about what happened, why it happened and what is going to happen next. The choice creates a problem at the end of the story because we are not certain what is fantasy.

2. Examine the portrayal of the narrator's husband. a) Write one paragraph, encapsulating personality description. The narrator tells us John is a complex and sometimes contradictory character. He is very practical, «he scoffs openly at any talk of things not to be felt and seen and put down in figures». He is a controlling type as we see from how he always tells what needs to be done and how. We also see his character is patronizing. For example, he calls his wife « a blessed little goose» and treats her like a little kid. However, despite of this negative character traits, John is a grateful and loving husband.

b) In what way and to what degree is such a characterization necessary in order for this story to arrive at the outcome it does? Could the story achieve the same effect without the presence of such a character? Explain. Such a characterization is necessary for contrast. It helps to understand how out of touch with reality the woman is. In addition, John's controlling and isolating behavior contributes to her madness.

c) Could the same story be written today, in the twenty first century? Would the characters be as plausible? Comment. I am sure that the story could be written not only today in the twenty first century but in the future also. Nervous

The first similarity between these two characteristics is that they have limited views of their wives. Throughout the story John constantly thinks of the narrator as a child. First he puts her in a child’s nursery (p. 298). He also calls her by children’s names; for example, he uses the terms “blessed little goose” (p.299) and “little girl” (p.303). Whenever she makes a suggestion, he dismisses it, as he does when she asks him to change the wallpaper (p.299). John also threatens her by saying he may take her to a nerve specialist if she does not get well faster, as if he were a father instilling fear in his child (p.301). At one point John carries her upstairs, lays her in bed, sits by her bedside, and reads to her until she grows tired (p.302). He even comforts her as one does a child when he finds her awake at night, saying to her, “’Don’t go walking about like that, you’ll get a cold’” (p.303). Consequently, John shows that he thinks his wife is not a responsible adult.…

The Yellow Wallpaper is about a woman, named Jane, who goes away with her husband John, who is a Doctor, for the summer to live in a colonial mansion. She is depressed or has some sort of mental illness after her baby is born and that is why they went away so she would get better. Her husband makes her mainly stay on the second floor in a room by herself where she is forbidden from writing, exercising, or working. She begins to write in a journal as a stress reliever and she uses it as an outlet to help her get out some feelings. She talks about the wallpaper a little bit in the beginning, she does not like it all and when she asks John to do something about it he ignores it and thinks she is being foolish. The Fourth of July rolls around and she gets to see a few people but her condition seems to be getting worse to the point where she is crying every day. She starts to complain about John, about how he is controlling and suppressing. As the story goes along the more disturbing the wallpaper becomes to her also every time her husband shoots her ideas of going home down she becomes even more obsessed with the wallpaper. Jane starts to think that the sub-pattern on that wall looks like a woman who is trying to escape the main pattern. She starts sneaking around the house and her goal to destroy the paper and free the woman. In the end she goes out of her complete mind and scratches at wall thinking she is freeing herself. When John comes home and unlocks the door to see her hysterically scratching the wallpaper off he faints and the story ends with her stepping over her husband and leaving.…

People may wonder how effective characterization is so important in a novel. Characterization is highly vital in a novel because it’s what builds up the characters in the story. Without effective characterization, readers aren't able to receive a vivid image of the characters in the novel. Characterization also helps people get engaged with the novel. Three polarizing characters like Vera Claythorne, Philip Lombard, and General Macarthur from Agatha Christie's novel, And Then There Were None exemplify the strong character traits they have and how their character traits have an ultimate affect the decisions they make.…
