The Young Goodman Brown Symbolism
Do you know the meaning of symbolism? Well it has a very deep meaning, to not just stories but, life and how some certain things are represented in our history, lives and society. As symbolism is represented in the Young Goodman Brown it shows a great ordeal of hypocrisy, path of life, and deception. Even though the story was taken place in Salem in 1885 it really related to the situations going on in the people’s life. Hypocrisy is demonstrated very highly by Hawthorne in the story because, Salem was described as a very beautiful place. In reality there was so much going on as it states in the story “Came forth, at sunset into the streets of Salem village” but the truth was that there was good people who were already bad deep inside
their soul.
Such as the man in the forest, he was an evil person but deceived goodman to be a great person. As Goodman Brown walked down the path it represents his doubt of good vs evil. As the devil says “This is a dull pace for the beginning of a journey, take my staff, if you're so soon weary” he tries to manipulate goodman brown and tries to confuse him down his path of life. But as always the devil wins on his manipulation. Goodman brown then started questioning his faith.
As the devil and Goodman Brown keep speaking,the devil tries to manipulate him. By speaking about his father and his grandfather the devil also said he has helped them in the past but Goodman did not fall for his lie. When goodman states “Too far, Too far, my father nor my grandfather have never went to the woods on such an errand”. But even though the devils lie did not work he surly confused him, as he looks up to the sky in confusion doubting if there really was a heaven above him.
In my opinion symbolism is a really great way to explain many different ways of our lives also to really understand how people lived throught our american history. But it does not end there, it is just the beginning of our great examples of symbolism.
