Theater has been harshly censored due to religious, political, or other bias reasons and it is unlikely this was ever done for the greater good of the public. For example, many productions that do not follow a heteronormative plot arc are censored greatly if they're even allowed to be performed in that specific location. Other examples can be drawn for the numerous times theater productions have been banned altogether and all drama entertainment has been prohibited.
Censorship is a show of power that acts in silencing a community for delivering any messages that go against those in control. Especially with the vast resources that are now available, if a person wanted to watch, read, write, or discuss any possible issue it would not be hard to discover a way to do it.
Censorship can be far harsher than it ever should be in some art forms, but without any type of filter the general public could be exposed to horrific and/or offensive material that isn't suited for public consumption.
