Theater Personal Essay
I found myself once again standing on that ledge looking across the fissure, my heart pounding the walls of my chest, time slowing down. Afraid to take that leap of faith into the unknown, my body paralyzed by fear. Everything that I was running from finally caught up to me in those few moments of doubt and hesitation. I came back to my classroom, standing on the stage, the teacher calling my name. Why did I ever decide to take a theater class? I've always known how utterly scared I am of preforming in any fashion. And so when I got the opportunity in my sophomore year of high school to take a theater class I surprised everyone, and perhaps myself most of all, and I signed up to take it for the following year. Deep down I had always dreamt of having a career in theater and film, and so my dreams pushed me to forget my fears and take the first step towards my future. As summer went on I quickly forgot what I had literally signed myself up for and fell back into my usual routines. When I received my schedule for the next year I saw “it” sitting there at the bottom of the list, reminding me of the torture to come. Within the first week of the class we were assigned our first presentation, reciting a monologue or a poem on stage to the whole class. I wanted to find anyway out of the class, I even could have gotten out, but I convinced myself to stay, leave my comfort zone behind, and just do the best I could. When I got up onto the stage I could feel my heart beating faster and faster, adrenaline being pumped into my blood stream. My only thoughts were that I didn't belong up on the stage and that I wouldn't be able to do it. I successfully got through the first two stanzas before I froze up and all the words turned to mush. My mind started to wander, much less to find the missing words and more so to find the missing courage. The teacher called my attention back and allowed me to start over. I was rewarded with experience and knowledge that day, and it has continued to propel me further and further. Every step leading up to that day was one step outside of my comfort zone, and so has every step I've taken since. I've acted in plays and appeared in short films, each time expanding my comfort level and pushing myself to grow as a person. Because on that day I learned that a good life really does begin at the edge of your comfort zone and you only need faith in yourself to get there.

Later in life when I was 17 or so I started my acting career. I played my first role in a production of Shakespeare's Richard III and turned into a star. As you can see I had everything going for me. I was on tour all over the country with a Shakespearean acting company and I was adored by many. But, then a respiratory illness in 1863 meant that my fame was over, and that I would have to take temporary leave from the stage. There is something I didn’t tell you though, Just days prior to Abraham Lincoln's famed Gettysburg Address that same year, I saw him…. He was watching my show “The Marble Heart” at Ford’s theater, and this is where the good part of my story…

I thought I would immediately rush the stage and began belting out the tunes of the song, amazing the audience with my brilliant monologue. Reality quickly set in. It seems I was rather naïve to think this way because before I could do perform, there was much work to be done. For starters, I had to rehearse and practice my lines over and over until I memorized them. This was not easy since I had to absorb the essence of the message behind every line of my monologue. “Was I expressing the correct emotions? Was I angry or was I expressing a joyous emotion?” There were doubts that crossed my mind. Before I could sing “Heart,” I had to participate in vocal warm-ups making sure to carry out every note clearly, making sure to carefully…

At one point in high school, my trigonometry teacher played Stand and Deliver to inspire us as we worked towards our own AP exam. To see Jaime Escalante take personal stake in his students academically and emotionally was exactly what I needed to discover what I will be during for the rest of my life: working to inspire passion, curiosity, and excellence in my students. But the question is: how do I pursue this outside of Hollywood fantasies? I believe these goals can be achieved through four objectives: by practicing radical empathy every day, by cultivating agents of social change, by encouraging agency in disenfranchised students, and by providing a nurturing space in which students can grow. Radical empathy is the very foundation of theatre.…

Cameo came over the intercom and listed off some seventh and eighth graders to report to Mr. Phalen’s office after class. As she started reading the names off the list, I didn’t think she was going to call my name. Until she said the last name and it was “Ashley LaBounty”. While everyone else was looking around ;confused I knew exactly why I was being called to Mr. Phalen’s. It was for Honor Choir. I had noticed that the last couple weeks, while in choir, he had been watching some individuals (including me) very closely. He was examining how well we sing and if we would qualify for Honor…

“Crew call after school, be there or be square” the posted announcement said. I still remember fairly vividly the initial day starting off as a theatre technician. Learning the procedure and getting acquainted with the people were many of the first things I did. Many of the experienced “techies,” as we called them explained to me the method they built sets and how to program the lighting console. Using power tools and saws were fun but planning and executing each step was the best part about it. Many mistakes were made while I was learning but time allowed me to develop and enhance my abilities.…

At the age of fourteen, I decided to audition for La-Guardia High School of the Performing Arts. I will never forget the lady at the front desk and how her eyes pierced through me like a fierce beast studying her prey. As I reflected on mothers’ encouraging words, the beast rudely yelled out my number and said, “Are you going in there dressed like that? Good luck, you’ll need it!" She then directed me to the auditorium where, by God’s amazing grace, I found favor with the judges and made it into La-Guardia High School of the Performing Arts. That victory was short lived due to my mother’s decision to relocate us for safety reasons.…

It all started the first day of fifth grade. I tried to focus on my teacher; however, the constant thump in my head drowned out her voice. Not knowing this feeling, an emotion of fear displayed on my face. I became perplexed, yet resolute. There I was, sitting in the middle of the class looked upon by every single student in the entire room. I had a feeling of total awkwardness and embarrassment, and my mind went totally blank. There, like a terrible dream I never thought would come to pass, as time went by like a broken hourglass. I stared, as if I had seen the future through my eyes, as the teacher stared right back at me with her look of despise. She knew deep inside that I was unaware of her dialogue, yet she simply waited in silence for my response. Words began to spiral in my head as I searched for the one phrase that would satisfy my instructor. I threw a quick glance at the other students, and watched as they snickered and babbled off to their friends in a dialect that confused me. I heard myself mutter, “I don’t understand,” each word gradually rolling off my tongue. Awkward silence.…
