Practical Performance Proposal

Stimulus 3: (Creation myth) “How the World Was Made”

Candidate Session Number: 002839-0013

Mehvish Khalid

Word Count: 1409
Section A: Pitch

Mark Twain’s play The Diaries of Adam and Eve, which is adapted for the stage by David Birney, inspired me. The stimulus was “How the World was Made” and The Diaries of Adam and Eve instantly came to mind. The play would be set in a clearing in a forest preferably with some trees around. It would be like an Environmental theater but it will take place outside. There would be blankets on the floor for the audience to sit on. The back of the set would be cleared so that there can be a curtain for the actors and sound system. The play would take place during the night and the lights would be set up off to the sides so that the audience can see the play clearly. The spotlight will focus over the actor when either Adam or Eve are talking and the lights will be dimmed to show the actions of the other actor while one is speaking. The costumes for Adam at first would be no shirts and lightweight white pants. Eve would wear a costume covered in leaves and a shawl. The animals should wear something according to whatever animal they are for the audience to distinguish between them. The props, such as, white garden benches, tree with apples, 2 baskets, some baby dolls, and a kiddie pool to indicate a pond will come out when they are needed.

Section B: Visuals

The stage was one small platform higher than the floor with two small sets of stairs on the sides that led to small balconies with raining along them that had doors to back stage. The set on the stage was three backdrops that can be folded in and out to change setting. In the center on the stage were two double doors that opened to move on and off stage. Below the small platform was a large open area in the center of all of the seating. There were very few props used in the play. In the begging to make a car they had the characters sit on a bench and had other cast members that were the scene helpers hold a bumper and flashlight in front of the characters to get the image of a car…

Have you ever wondered where the origins of theatre began? It is a well-known fact that the earliest forms of drama were developed in Ancient Greek by philosophers interested in using entertainment for social and philosophical commentary. It is essential that young people are exposed to the earliest form of scripted drama as it provides a foundation for understanding dramatic styles and conventions which are the basis for all the theatre which followed.…

Millions of people across the country roamed the streets in search of jobs, hoping to find some way to get the money they needed to feed their families. The Great Depression in the United States during the 1930s affected not only those who worked in jobs requiring physical labor, but those involved with theatre and the arts as well. The Federal Theatre Project was one of the Works Progress Administration (WPA)'s projects that was created to help deal with the economic turmoil caused by the Great Depression. Thousands of artists, whether it was in the form of writing, music, or performing arts, were put out of work. The Federal Arts projects were created to reinstate jobs for unemployed artists as well as create displays of art for the public.…

Act I, the story of Adam and Eve was a phenomenal piece that was truly effective emotionally and comprehensibly. Act II also had an impact on emotion as well, but not as strongly as the Adam and Eve story. The story worked out excellent for I felt it blended the stories to where everybody can understand because the bible can be very confusing. Both acts drew the crowd’s attention because the actors were so passionate in their roles, you knew the play was fake, but you couldn’t help but to get drawn into certain scenes that touched you emotionally. The actual script of the play I felt was amazing. It added some humor so the crowd was able to smile throughout some parts of the play then to feel like they were watching an soap opera.…

Although it may be hard for a little boy to pick up a girls “dolly”, I strongly believe that children in a preschool atmosphere feel more comfortable playing with toys deemed towards a different gender. In a preschool classroom there are a large variety of toys and classmates of different genders. Children are encouraged to play together and explore different toys regardless of gender. Children whom are not enrolled in early education tend to be around more gender specific toys and are encouraged to play with the toys they have at home. Therefore I propose that Gender specific toys will influence the interaction between boys and girls, and will have a greater influence on children not enrolled in…

The characters play a large role in both movies as they are the ones telling the story of Romeo and Juliet. The characters were positioned to be seen with weird quirks as Baz Luhrmann is very artsy film producer, as he in shows in the personalities of the main characters seen in act one. The main characters in the Baz Luhrmann movie were: Romeo, Benvolio, Juliet, Tybalt and Paris. Romeo’s personality in the act, for example, was depressing and moody as he was seventeen, a teenage boy which makes his character adolescent and immature which can be seen when he tries to kiss Juliet at the party when he first speaks to her. Romeo was soon to be more pushy and forceful in wanting Juliet. As for Juliet, her persona can be seen to be smart but yet…

Recently there have been a number of cases that involve the U.S policing force using excessive force. This has caused an uproar in many communities concerning the lack of equality among all races. Police have to use a certain amount of force to overcome a suspect, but the recent deaths caused by the hands of the police have fueled a heated debate among Americans. In America, black males are generally perceived to be more aggressive and dangerous than the average white male. Police are trained to assess the level of threat. This racial bias can affect the way a police officer might think. Making the situation seem “reasonable” on one hand and “unreasonable” on the other. There has been a rift between policing…

Theatre imitating life. Naturalism brought science into the game, with more electricity in theatres, removal of audience, putting them in the dark as if they were eavesdropping. Importance of everyday and ordinary. Potential tool for improving humanity by showing the wrongs. Brought in the fourth wall, analytical distance. extending the idea to the imaginary boundary between the audience and the stage. Character is more important than plot/action. The model of theatre as scientific ideas and the idea that human beings are distinguished by society, like showing the subject as a product of social forces. Playing around with that idea, like Emile Zola did in his play “Miss Julie” dropping a high class girl into a test tube with a servant (lower class) of particular type/ character and see what happens.…

This lesson will be part of a larger unit presenting creation or origin stories from a variety of faith traditions. This unit and its lessons will allow students to understand the importance of creation stories and their role in a particular faith or culture. These stories vary by culture and typically reflect the worldview of the people and their natural surroundings, animals and other objects associated with their region. The word myth comes from the Greek word mythos, which simply means “story” and encompasses the meanings of legend, story, speech, word, and thought (Ferguson). A myth is an anonymous, traditional story that explains a belief, a custom, or a mysterious natural…

The Creation of the Earth from the Yuchi people and The Iroquois Creation Story from the Iroquois people show slightly different worldviews, yet both stories opinion of creation have the element of earth being built, created, as their titles each allude to. These stories worldviews are more alike than not because they each build from the view that earth’s creations come from a higher being or savior. The savior in each story consciously altered what already naturally existed of earth at that time. This element of creation by a something or someone is where the stories converge. In the Yuchi story the creators of earth are Godly animal-like creatures that have their own unique traits; this allows them to build the land, hills and valleys of earth together. In the Iroquis story the creators of earth are what the monsters (lower beings) of the story would understand to be the offspring and body of a mythical being from above, what they know to be called a human woman and her twin sons. The underlining creator in each story is “the mother,” contrast from the dominant Christian worldview, which emphasizes “the farther,” as the superior and ultimate creator. Both stories also personify light and the objects that give light.…
