Theatre Review Of The Play Hairspray By Margo Lion
The live theatre production I decided to review was Hairspray by Margo Lion. The musical Hairspray is based off the film by John Waters. The play focus on a teenage girl, Tracy Turnblad. Tracy is a high schooler who love dancing and is obsessed with a popular local dance show called “The Corny Collins Show”. Tracy auditions and is soon given a spot on the popular show. Tracy is excited to be on the show and excited to inform everyone of her plans to integrate The Corny Collins Show. Though this comedy did have a happy ending, throughout the musical the world got a little turned upside down. The overall conflict I was say in this production was Tracy’s mission to integrate the Corny Collins show and the obstacles she faced. Her rivals in …show more content…
Each character had a different style and sense of dance. I would not consider the dances or dance moves incorporated in this production theatrical nor abstract dancing. The dances did not tell a story nor did they convey and idea, and they did not create any mood nor have an effect. However, the dancing in this musical could possibly pass as character dancing. The dancing could related to character dancing because the dance moves express a particular character and has a pattern relatable to its persona. When Tracy met Seaweed in detention he taught her some of his dance moves. “His” could mean dance moves he personally had come up or with him being African American, dance moves from his personal culture. Either way the dance moves Seaweed had introduced to Tracy expresses his particular character. Each dance move Seaweed performed had some type of similarity in them creating that pattern and relating one move to another. It seemed that as the play went on and the good guys of the story got closer and closer to victory, the force and tempo of the dancing increased. In the beginning, when Tracy first won the spot on the Corny Collins show, the tempo of the dance moves was not very fast and did not have much force at all. Once she met Seaweed and learned some new move, the force grow stronger and the tempo started to increase. At the end of the play when every is on set of The Corny Collins Show, the tempo of the dances are very fast and everyone joined together is dancing with much force. The dance moves incorporated in this production were put together in a way that made it easier for the viewers to

Furthermore, there is also a lot of dancing in the musical. There is modern, tap, jazz, classical and ballet dancing. One thing I noticed while watching An American in Paris, is that there was a large amount of tap dancing. Also, there is one dance that really reveals the character of Lise. Henri is describing Lise to Adam. In each song he describes, Lise dances the way he portrays her. First, Lise is enchanting with great beauty. She is in a pink dress spinning elegantly in big circles. Then, she is exciting and exotic. For this dance, she dance seductively with a chair in attire that shows a lot of skin. Henri also describes her as sweet and shy. This time she is in a yellow dress that falls past her knees, and she is seen tiptoeing around.…

I learned man things about the dance ballet for example they alone more men in ballet the I expected and they wear make-up also. They are many structured techniques that go in the dance of ballet. They are also different ways that performers get ready to perform some stretched or some even jump rope. They were many threats that the dancers did too keep the blood flowing. Ballet also takes a lot of coordination and balance. All through the movie there were many times balance was needed. Ballet is a structured dance.…

Dancers in this play used many different forms of dance, using props, having a partner, or dancing in unison with a group. The movements in their choreography were very large, incorporating the whole body, generally performed in a sensual or risqué fashion. I was familiar with a few of the steps they included in their choreography, specifically grand battements, attitude leg swings, pique turns, and pas de bourrees. The dancers, similar to teaching from our class, always had a very elongated neck, standing tall, and pointing their toes. I believe that this makes for a very confident look when on stage performing and noticed this stance in the other actors as well.…

What was that experience like? Why do you think more theatres don’t do Carrie? It was a really interesting experience to play Carrie. It was unlike any role I have ever played or most likely will play again. There were definitely moments where it was difficult or awkward to act as her character, but I feel like I grew a lot from the experience. I think a lot of theatres don’t perform Carrie because there are some sensitive and questionable subjects within the play. It is, however, a very powerful and moving story that I will always be grateful I had the chance to participate in. MTA chose to do this show to highlight the effects of bullying and how it is so prevalent in our society, and to remind us all: “What does it cost to be kind?”…

There are many other examples of dancing being used in this play, such as when Mrs Lyons is teaching Edward how to dance after the Johnstone’s have moved (but Mrs Lyons and Edward still do not know that they only live a short distance away from each other) and Mrs Lyons is content with Edwards dancing as she says “That’s it Edward, you’re dancing”. Also “Edward grabs Linda’s mate and begins to Waltz her around the street” is another moment where dancing has been used to create a very mellow feel to the play.…

Then I joined the Parkview theatre. As far as I could tell, everyone had seen this amazing musical except me. Lacking funds, I could not get the soundtrack. I’d not even heard any of the music until I joined Chelsea and Colleen’s skit of “What is This Feeling?” (Odd correlation, this song twice being my first introduction to the musical). I was blown away by how energetic and powerful the song was when I first heard in full, and scurried as fast as I could to the internet to look it up. Needless to say, I started to really want to see this musical. I had given up conviction of ever getting a chance to see it, though, since I had neither the time nor the money; then, a beacon of hope alighted upon my spirit: I was going to see Wicked at the Fox. That day, I saw Heaven in all of its glory, and I can confidently say that when I die, I am going to Oz…on stage.…

The dancing went along with whatever music was playing. If it was dramatic they would dance together and then separate from each other in a dramatic way. If it was romantic they would dance together slowly. The whole play consisted of pantomime since it was a ballet. It did because they would use gestures to let us know what was going on. The main characters were Clara, the nutcracker, and the King of Mice. Their costumes and dancing did help me understand who they were. Clara wore a robe, since she did dream the whole thing. The nutcracker turned into a prince and the King of Mice just looked mean, even the way he was dressed. Clara and the Nutcracker like each other, that’s why they’re always together and looked at each other in this lovey way. The prince fights the King of Mice because he’s vicious and tries to harm them. It helped me understand by the way the whole ballet dance was…

An individual’s determination to pursue a dream can inspire them to challenge society’s expectations as they transition into a new world. Daldry portrays how barriers can prevent individuals to achieving their dream. In the opening scene, the slow motion shot of Billy jumping up and down on the bed with a close up shot of his ebullient face reveals his natural talent for dancing. It offers the reoccurring motif of dance and music, as the diegetic sounds of the T Rex song “Cosmic Dancer” plays and foreshadows what is to unfold: a story about a passion for dancing. The establishing shot shows that despite Billy’s awkward movements, there is a sense of harmony and freedom that dance provides for him. However, his lower-class status is revealed through high-angle shot in the…

The mass communication via television also meant that these dance steps could spread themselves with more speed thanks to their advertising within programming. This also allowed people who opposed the dance such as churchmen, to preach their believes on their negative outcomes for its rebellious and provocative culture. One famous example we probably all know is The Twist, which inspired a raft of new dances amongst young people as well as dances known as the Funky Chicken and the Monkey.…
