THEJAY
THE JAY by Yasunari Kawabata
Plot
A teenage girl by the name of Yoshiko lives with (and takes care of) her grandmother and her younger brother. The grandmother is almost blind and needs a lot of care. They hear a mother Jay outside and the grandmother tells them that it is looking for its baby, which fell out of the nest the night before (Yoshiko is confused how a nearly blind woman could have seen all of that but she doesn't say anything). Her brother comes in and tells her that he saw their mother and that she was married and really beautiful. Yoshiko and her younger brother had been told by their father that he had divorced their mother because she always wore flashy clothes and spent their money really fast. Yoshiko felt that it was something more but her father would always get angry if they brought it up. Yoshiko's father also arranged for her to marry someone and after her brother comes in and tells her about seeing their mother, she starts to get really upset and doesn't want to get married. She goes out into the garden and ends up finding the baby jay but its really weak and couldn't move. She gave the jay a drink and it started shouting out for its mother. The mother came and took the baby jay away. As this was happening Yoshiko wished that her parents were there to see what had happened.

Characters
Main:
Yoshiko: Yoshiko is the main character of the story and she is the person who takes care of the house, her brother, and her grandmother. She is being forced by her father to marry and, though she isn't looking forward to it, has accepted that it is something that she has to do.
Grandmother: We never learn the grandmother's name but she is mostly blind and provides Yoshiko with helpful wisdom. She says that she doesn't remember what Yoshiko looks like (because she's nearly blind) but yet, she knows why the Jay is chirping outside and is able to describe why it was there, what happened to the baby jay, and she seems to know where the baby was as well

The daughter is clearly very angry at the mom because all they ever do is travel and the one time she makes plans, her mother says they have to travel again. If I were this girl I would also be very upset with my mother, but it would be ok because she is probably doing it so that she can support me and feed me. Although, the girl is very hostile right now, she still loves her mother. Also, it is not only the daughter that is tense, it is also the mother. The mother is tense because she knows that her daughter is angry at her, and that she will have to make it up to her to make things…

Finally building up the courage to open it they slowly picked up the box top but didn’t look into the box yet. One of the girls asked “Do you guys think what I think it is?” One of the other girls responded “If you think it is a baby then yes.” The four girls then looked at each other with a look or fear on their faces scared to actually look to see what’s inside the box. After another 5 minutes one or the girls built up the courage to look inside the box, and she saw a baby boy lying there and his chest seemed to barely be moving up and down. She then said to her friends in a panicked whispered voice “It’s a baby boy he looks like he is barely breathing! What do we do!” All the other girls looked into the box to see if she was lying…..she wasn’t. Another girl responded “we have to help it otherwise it will die!” The third girl then said “We can’t help it ourselves we would need our parents help and how are we supposed to explain to them that out of nowhere a baby boy showed up in a shoe box in the attic?! We can’t we have to go now before it is too late and we get caught up here with this baby!” The fourth girl then responded “But it will die if we don’t help it! We can’t just let a baby die when we know we can save it!” The third girl then responded back “Yes we can and we will, we are not going to get in trouble to save something that probably won’t make it anyway! And besides it's probably evil if you think about how it got here!” After she says this they seem to go quiet, it had sounded like the world had just stopped. They were all looking around at each other trying to figure out what each of them were thinking. None of them wanted to be the one that was different and disagreed on what they did, they all wanted to do what the…
