Paul starts with the verse with saying that physical fitness is a good thing, but having godliness is so much more. Paul isn’t emphasizing that fitness is something that needs to be practiced in this verse nor is he saying it shouldn’t be, he is likely using it to explain why he compared the intensity of working out with the intensity to seek after God in the verse before. Paul split this verse into two parts, 10a was for relaying on godliness and 10b was to provide further grounds for ministry efforts. The first words of verse ten is “It is for this reason” Paul is using those words to point back to everything that has been said about godliness and its promise for eternal life. Next Paul goes on and says “we work and struggle” Paul says this to describe the Gospel mission. The Greek word “κοπιῶμεν” meaning “work” is used numerous times to reference Paul’s missions work. The word “ἀγωνιζόμεθα” is used to mean “struggle” or “to strive” he uses these words to go back to the imagery of the athletic training. Paul depicts great effort and risk involved with working in sharing the gospel. Paul combines the words “κοπιῶμεν” and “ἀγωνιζόμεθα” probably to characterize the degrees of effort and commitment involved with mission work.
