Thematic Perspectives on Macbeth
James Illius Mr. Toner English 12 3 February 2009 Thematic Perspectives on Macbeth In “Physcoanalytical Criticism,” Karin Thomson writes that the loss Lady Macbeth endures, by the loss of her child or children, causes the concealment of her true character, disclosed only during her subconscious mind frame. During her sleep, lady Macbeth would sleepwalk recalling her involement during the assassination scheme, repeatedly trying to wash the horrific blood off of her hands. This water though cannot embellish the deed that “cannot be undone”. Concious, Lady Macbeth is calm and collect when preparing for the murder and is seen multiple times throughout the play before her end. She talks to her husband, domineering and manipulative to lower him to her level of morals and rewards his brutal use of power. Though each act of power he misuses torments her during her subconscious state, eventually leading to her abrupt suicide, leaving her never able to deal with the loss of her child. In “Christian Perspectives” Jane Kingsley-Smith states that all of the characters of the play choose a side of good vs. evil. Macbeth and lady Macbeth, having acted upon the prophecies with the deeds, they have chosen the side opposed to the heavens. Duncan, Malcolm, Macduff and Banquo, having chosenthe side of good, oppose Macbeth and his wife from keeping the crown, reflecting the biblical battle of heaven vs. hell. Macbeth and his wife gain transient lead, but in the end shortly after the loss of his wife, he loses his life in the final battle. In “Macbeth and Feminism.” by Dr. Caroline Cakebread, she states that the effects ofLady Macbeth’s over powering feminine influences over Macbeth’s Works Cited Cakebread, Dr. Caroline. “Macbeth and Feminism.” The Shakespeare Institute. 29 January 2009 . Lady Macbeth is a controversial figure. She is seen by some as a woman of strong will who is ambitious for herself and who is astute enough to recognise her husband’s strengths and weaknesses, and ruthless enough to exploit them. They see her in her commitment to evil and in her realisation that the acquisition of the Crown has not brought her the happiness she had expected, and finally, as one who breaks down under the strain. Others see her as a woman ambitious for her husband whom she loves. She recognises the essential good in him, and feels that, without her, he will never win the Crown. She allies herself with the powers of the occult for his sake, but here inherent femininity breaks down under the strain…

William Shakespeare ‘permeates almost all aspects of our society,’ and speaks ‘to us through his plays’ by commenting ‘on his life and culture as well as our own’ (Sir George Williams University, 2000). This is no different in his acclaimed play Macbeth, which tells the story of nobleman Macbeth and his wife, Lady Macbeth who plot and murder the king of Scotland in order to obtain the throne, exposing “human nature, ambition, evil, gender, human relationships, kingship,” (Sir George Williams University, 2000) and supernatural forces. The play explores the ideologies and cultural assumptions of witchcraft, gender roles, the great chain of being, divine…

"It is the responsibility of the writer to expose our many grievous faults and failures and to hold up to the light our dark and dangerous dreams, for the purpose of improvement." This quote suggests that writers must face their failures and confront their dangerous desires for purpose of learning from their own mistakes, people who don't learn from past mistakes are bound to repeat them. Dreams to many of us are fantasies that we want to become reality. It is up to the individual to determine how far a person is willing to go turn that dream into reality. In the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare, Shakespeare writes about the act of dreaming and person’s thoughts as they sleep, as well as the ambitions and goals that a person has. Murder is a recurring theme in the tragedy of Macbeth. Although there are countless murders, the play DOES distinguish between honorable and dishonorable violence. For example, Macbeth begins to form an internal conflict prior to murdering Duncan. The conflict can be seen throughout lines 34-64 of Scene 2 in Act two, specifically with the lines, “I see thee yet, in form as palpable as this which now I draw.” This murder is definitely seen as a dishonorable death, as Macbeth murders Duncan due to the fact that he wishes the prophecy to come true. Another example of dishonorable death would be in scene three of act three, when murderers are hired to kill Banquo. This death is seen as dishonorable as it was only committed to fulfill the prophecy. Not only was it dishonorable for that specific reason; it was seen as dishonorable as Banquo’s ghost came back to haunt Macbeth while having dinner with the lords. Macbeth constantly sees the ghost throughout dinner, specifically when the ghost sits in Macbeth’s chair. This shows how dishonorable it was to murder Banquo, as it was only to fulfill the prophecy. However, the play does distinguish between dishonorable and honorable deaths. Macbeth’s death in the end was honorable, as he deserved to die. Macbeth was responsible for the madness throughout the entire story, killing countless men as he was afraid of the revelations that had came true from the prophecy. Macduff’s killing of Macbeth was done due to the fact that Macduff was avenging his family; however, Macbeth’s killings were done out of terror. Without a doubt, the tragedy of Macbeth distinguishes between honorable and dishonorable deaths. This play also can be seen as a plea for peace and human harmony, by supporting the fact that people will murder not only out of greed, but out of honor as well.…

    Gender Role In Macbeth

Lady Macbeth is driven to suicide, in part by the pressure of unifying her femininity and her ambition. Macbeth takes a stand in battle, entering a fatal fight in an attempt to regain his masculinity. While some may argue that it is not their gender, but the guilt of their actions that influenced these characters’ behavior, it is clear that many characters in Macbeth are forced to hide their identity. Macbeth, an “open book” (cite), struggles to conceal the fact that he murdered Duncan. Lady Macbeth takes on a different personality depending on the situation she is in. There is a clear correlation between whether a character stays true to themselves and whether they end up dead or alive at the end of the play. Even disregarding gender, it is the constant fight to unify many sides of one identity that drives the characters to their deaths. While it may seem cliche, Shakespeare leaves the reader with the conclusion that it is incredibly important to always encompass one true…

Often times in our world, it can be agreed that not everything is what it seems. People, events, and nature often display signs of one thing while signifying something completely different in actuality. This may consequently lead to confusion between what is real and what is just a figment of the imagination. Authors often pick up on this theme of appearance vs. reality, and use it to enhance their works. William Shakespeare’s Macbeth includes the theme of appearance vs. reality through the Macbeths’ covering of the appending murders, as well as in the couples’ reoccurring hallucinations, which are ultimately used to display the corruptness of ambitious human nature.…

Macbeth in the beginning of the play is a noble, humble and honourable person who, without question would sacrifice his life for the liberty of his King, Duncan. As the play progresses he attitude towards life in general changes completely, mainly due to the pressure that Lady Macbeth inflicts on him. However, Lady Macbeth has quite a surprising personality as she is not the stereotypical Elizabethan woman. Lady Macbeth is expected to be fragile, meek, innocent and comforting but in this unusual circumstance Lady Macbeth would very much rather “dashed the brains out” of an infant child. This is plain evidence to suggest that Lady Macbeth is of no stable condition. In addition to this surprising fact Lady Macbeth is cunning and bloodthirsty. She demands Macbeth in Act one, Scene Five to “look like th’innocent flower, but be the serpent under’t”. It is very common for a man to demand a female to pursue tasks but for a woman to demand a man, especially of something like sacrilege, is very unusual. This could mean two things, Macbeth is weak and is unable to depict his own decisions or/and that Macbeth is mentally deteriorating. Macbeth reason with Lady Macbeths orders in his soliloquy in Act one, Scene seven and from the things he…
