Theme and Narrative Elements in the Short Story- Week 2 Assignment

The short story I chose to write about is “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant (1884). In this paper, I will discuss the theme and literary elements such as symbolism and characters. I will also talk about how the literary elements affect the narrative theme. All of these elements put together are what makes the story of Mathilde Loisel and “The Necklace”.
As described in our text, “the theme in a story is a representation of the idea behind the story.” (Clungston, 2010) The theme of “The Necklace” in my opinion is appearances can be deceiving. Mathilde looked down on her life with M. Loisel and always wanted for more. She thought of herself as living in poverty when in fact she was middle class. M. Loisel provided a comfortable living for her but she always felt like she deserved more. Mathilde longed for a life of high society. She felt like objects such as clothes and jewels would make her life better. She wanted to look the part so badly that she failed to appreciate what she did have.
When Mathilde gets the dress and necklace she finally feels like she belongs. Those objects make her feel better about her life. They make her feel happy and envied by others. She loves the attention she gets while wearing them but this is only short lived. Once she loses the necklace her life only gets worse. She and M. Loisel struggle for ten years to pay off the replacement necklace. She was so caught up in appearance that she failed to realize that the necklace she borrowed was a fake to begin with.
She was so into appearing rich and perfect that she chose not to tell her friend that she had lost the necklace. She was willing to work hard and sacrifice everything just to have one fleeting night of looking the part. If she 'd had some humility to begin with then her friend would have told her it was a fake and she wouldn 't have lost so much of her life. All of this just to keep up an appearance that she thought destiny had slighted her.
Symbolism is used throughout “The Necklace” to represent false and true appearances. The actual diamond necklace is the primary symbol. Though it appears to be beautiful and real it is really just a fake. "Oh, my poor Mathilde. But mine were false. At most they were worth five hundred francs!"(Maupassant, 1884) Initially when Mathilde borrowed the necklace her friend did not tell her the diamonds were false and not worth much money. Mathilde borrowed the necklace in order to appear wealthy. Diamonds are a symbol of wealth.
A diamond is also a symbol of commitment between a husband and a wife. I saw this between M. and Mme. Loisel because he stuck by her side when she lost the necklace. He was there for her and used his inheritance to buy a new necklace for her friend. Together they worked for ten years to pay off the debt from the necklace.
This brings me to the character of M. Loisel. He was a committed husband. He made a good living and provided for his wife even if she was blind to this. He was the type of man to save his money for things he wanted. “He grew a little pale, for he was reserving just that sum to buy a gun and treat himself to a little shooting, the next summer, on the plain of Nanterre, with some friends who used to shoot larks there on Sundays.”(Maupassant, 1884)

I agree that the writer’s goal was accomplish because through symbolism of a necklace, Maupassant was able to reveal the moral of the story. We see in the story that the main character who was obsessed with her look wasn’t satisfied with her life. She had a good husband who cared for her and did everything to make her happy. She did not see that. This can be applied to reality in the sense that we get caught up with what we look like or what we are wearing, that we go to lengths to make it happen. Through the symbol of a necklace, the author was able to convey to the readers the theme that vanity is worthless and there’s a price to pay for vanity and that we should be grateful for what we have.…

After the party, Madame Loisel loses the necklace, resulting in tireless work, loans, and night jobs for her and her husband in order to pay back the equivalent of the price. The couple finally succeeds when all the money is paid ten years later, only for Mathilde to discover that the necklace was ironically a fake, and worth a very small percentage of what the couple paid. The theme of this story is that an overemphasis on material wealth can shrink the spirit and leave one open to the changeability of fortune. The situational irony highlights this moral because the Loisels would never have had to exhaust themselves if Madame Loisel wasn’t so obsessed with riches and wealth. From the very beginning of the story, she wastes her time dreaming of luxuries such as fine silks, beautiful furniture, and gourmet feasts. Even when she is at Madam Forestier’s house to try on necklaces to borrow, she is never satisfied until she has seen the very best. Madame Loisel’s preoccupation with appearance clouds her judgment as well. As soon as she realizes that she has lost the necklace, she should simply come clean to Madam Forestier. Instead, she is too concerned with how her reputation will be affected, so she keeps quiet. She later pays the price for this when she discovers that the necklace is “false [and]…worth five hundred francs at most.” The life that she gets instead as punishment during the ten years in debt is even more difficult and meager than her life to begin with, which stresses how fame and fortune is so fleeting and unimportant in the scheme of…

In the story “The Necklace” the main character, Mathilda Losisel, is unhappily married to a clerk, and is ungrateful of the life she is living. She thinks that she deserves to be living a better lifestyle, and that materialistic objects and fancy things will make her happy rather than love. Mathilda is invited to the ball in the beginning of the story, and immediately she turns selfish and wants her husband to get the things she desires for her ball. Her husband tries everything he can to please his wife in every way that he could do to try to make her happy. Not once in the story did she say thank you for her husband’s efforts because she wasn’t thankful for what he had done for her. She also borrows an expensive necklace from one of her close friends. As she was partying away at the ball, she did not once think about her husband. She was more focused on the fact that other people were giving her attention. Later on in the story Mathilda loses the necklace, and her husband does everything he can to try to get it back. He ended up getting money to buy a brand new necklace, but had to pay off debts he had from raising that money by working it off and Mathilda has to work it off as well. Because of Mathilda’s greed and ignorance it had lead her to the situation of debt she was in. Throughout the story she only worried about herself rather than thinking about how much effort her husband was doing to making her happy. In the end the necklace turned out to…

In any literary work, it is absolutely essential to have characters, whether major or minor. It is also necessary to develop these characters through out the story. Character development gives the reader insight to the more important meanings or lessons of the story. “A characteristic of `The Necklace' is its extreme brevity: it is nine pages long. But this is not because all so-called extraneous details have been ruthlessly pared away. For the story is not as straightforward as it seems. The story-teller in `The Necklace' is a ludic narrator, sometimes mischievously misleading his reader, and sometimes building suspense by indulgence in personal digression”. (Adamson) lessons are usually brought out by the events that take place within the story. Looking at Guy De Maupassant's piece "The Necklace", we see a very clear development of the main and dynamic character is Mathidle. In the story, we see a change in her attitude about life. This change come about when she has to learn one of life's little lessons the hard way. She and her husband are forced to live a life of hard work and struggle because of her own selfish desires. Mathilde changes from a woman who spends her time dreaming of all the riches and glory she doesn't have, to realizing that she over looked all the riches she did have. The story opens with the description of how miserable Mathilde is. Maupassant describes her as "suffering constantly, feeling herself destined for all delicacies and luxuries." (Roberts 4) She sits dreaming of silent rooms…

The meaning of Moupassant’s “The Necklace” is that one should not fall into the trap of wishing for better things and not recognizing what one has to be thankful for. Moupassant uses the main character, Mme. Loisel, to illustrate this point as she struggles with her self-image and her desire to always be better in the eyes of others, especially the upper class and the rich.…
