Theme Of Alone Poem Annotated

This poem is written based on fear of our contemporaries and this is a moment when they looked back themselves suddenly, that’s why this poem is titled “Alone”. Sometimes people look back self suddenly just because by a chance to reflect their lives. Based on that concept this poem narrates the moment when they reflect themselves in first stanza, when we recognized it is time to rest their body and away from something that makes us tired in second stanza. And then, the third stanza talk about the final was ourselves, and no one around us. Usually, many people get afraid to go forward if they have done lots of works and no time for rest in the past. That’s why Pandora’s box is metaphor of the stressful circumstances of us. The first stanza narrates
about our fears by visualizing explanation such as giving physical motion as “turned back”, and “looked”. Also, “I came so far” embodies something went wrong and no one beside us. This stanza opens the door of entering this poem as providing visualized background information to readers. For the second stanza, it starts to give a moment to think and “look back” about our own identities. In common, we do not realize how we walked that far and what supposed to do. This comes up in the 2nd and 3rd sentences in the second stanza as repeating the same concept of sentence structure that emphasizes the feeling of tiredness by rhythm. Following the sentence, one of the senses of human, affright attributed human characteristic to an object something that locks us so this personification contributed to make a connection between the object and readers as providing vivid image. After that, consonance shows in “selfishness, enviousness, illnesses, and friendlessness” because these are all written in nouns that finish with “-ness” which repeated consonant sound at the ending of the words placed near each other. Final sentence in this stanza shows people who recognized the problem was too late to reset or correct the wrong way. As continues the blue mood, the third stanza begins, the first and second sentences repeat the beginning of the second stanza “when I turned back and looked myself” and “I realized”. Using the sentences more than one times is effective and powerful way to transfer the meaning to readers.
