Corruption is a serious issue found in society that should be dealt with. Corruption is
found in leadership. This type of corruption usually results in victims who are either affected
physically or mentally. In Lord of the Flies, MacBeth, and “American Idiot”, corruption is used as
a tool to control people in order to gain power, and to cause harm. Jack (from Lord of the Flies),
and Lady MacBeth (from MacBeth) use corruption as a way to gain power. In “American Idiot”
the media is using the airwaves to control people. The works studied in this essay showcases
the problem with corruption in society.

In Lord of the Flies, Simon is killed by Jack’s hunting group. They
watched as “Simon’s dead body moved out to sea” (Golding, 154). Jack’s longing for power
created a group that does not really care what happens, whether someone dies or not. King
Duncan dies in MacBeth because of Lady MacBeth’s longing for power. Lady MacBeth goes to
distract the guards and ring the bell so that MacBeth knows when to kill him, the bell rings, he
goes “and it is done” (Shakespeare, II, i, 62). The plan works, Duncan is dead and MacBeth is
crowned King. The media is causing the public hysteria. “Can you hear the sound of hysteria?”
(Green Day, 3). Hysteria usually means to have uncontrollable emotions, and sometimes people
can become mentally unstable. People who are mentally unstable are very dangerous. Lord of
the Flies, MacBeth, and “American Idiot” all show how victims can be affected from corruption.
