Theme Of Dehumanization In Night
Elie Wiesel once said “ We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented”. In Elie Wiesel’s novel Night a tragic theme is occurring throughout the book. Throughout the novel examples of dehumanization occur when Elie and his family are in the cattle car and told that “If anyone goes missing you all will be shot like dogs”. “Throw out all the dead! All the corpses outside!... Here is one! Take him! They undressed him, the survivors avidly sharing out his clothes, then to “gravediggers” took him, one by the head and one by the feet, and threw him out the wagon like a sack of flour”. “There no longer was any distinction between rich and poor, notables and the others; …show more content…
The thousands of people who died daily in Auschwitz and Birkenau, in the crematoria, no longer troubled me”. The death and dying did not affect the Jews, because that was all around them. The many children and mothers were sent to the crematoria to be killed they were sent in alive. “I watched other hangings. I never saw a single victim weep. These withered bodies had long forgotten the bitter taste of tears”. The people that did not obey we hanged or flogged in front of the camp for everyone to see. The hanging was torture to watch, but they desensitized to the death of one another. “All the block inmates stood naked between the rows of bunks. This must be how one stands for the Last Judgement”. The inmates were open to being taken by death. The last day could not come soon enough for some of the inmates. “I became A-7713. From then on, I had no other name”. A-7713 or A-7714 were not just numbers to the Jews they were who they were to be called. They numbers were not written on the body they were tattooed. The tattoo is not just on the body but in their horrific memories. Dehumanization is not right to do to people. People have feelings along with the many Jews that were in the concentration camps. Elie Wiesel is one of those many Jews that were in Auschwitz. He was dehumanized be the Germans. He was given a number for his name instead of Elie

Many factors contributed to the reason that the Germans tried to dehumanize the Jews in the concentration camps, partly so that they would lose the will to live. I feel like the German soldiers, ruthless as they were to the Jews, needed to dehumanize the Inmates because they didn’t have enough immortality to kill. But since the Jews were viewed, treated, and forced to live like animals, the German soldiers didn’t feel as wrong killing them.…

They were all packed into tight cattle cars. During the long period of travel, they suffered cruel conditions including only having just enough room to breathe and scare living necessities. Several deaths occurred on the journey to their destination in Auschwitz. Eliezer went through terrifying experience on board the cattle car. Upon reaching a town the bystanders would throw bread into the cattle cars and sit there and watch as the Jews would fight and kill each other over the piece of bread. When they arrived to the concentration camp, they were separated by strong from the weak. They were stripped from their clothes. If they had any gold in their teeth, they were sent to the area where they would have them removed. Then the troops tattooed numbers on the Jews as a constant reminder that the Germans owned them and as means of an identification…

For example, when Eliezer and the other Jews being shipped to the camp were crammed into small box cars, and given little food. When they arrived they were stripped of their clothes and stood in the cold, awaiting instruction. Consequently, the Jews had been completely stripped of their name, and Eliezer stated,” I became A-7713, from then on, I had no other name.” The Nazis stripped the Jews of what little bit of humanity they had left, their names. Inside the camps, their names were the least of their problems, and hunger became their lives. Indecently, they were only given a bowl of soup and a piece of bread daily, and were worked extremely hard and, in addition, were made to run around the camp or sit in cold mud. In one instance when Eliezer had stumbled upon Idek having intimate relations with a woman, which angered Idek immensely. Eliezer was later lashed for this and was lashed so severely that he could not walk or stand.…

Throughout Borowski’s collection of short stories, “This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen” various characters have been deceived into their own executions. The thought of being led to one’s own death without even knowing is what went through the minds of many Jews during the Holocaust. These victims had no control or say in their fates and faced the judgment without any sympathy or remorse from their executers. Although the victim’s futures were for the most part condemned, as they got closer and closer to death, few never lost hope that some miraculous intercession could drastically change their fate for the better. Their mindset is exemplified in “Auschwitz, Our Home (A Letter): “ We were never taught how to give up hope, and this is why today we perish in gas chambers” (Borowski 122). Through this, Borowski demonstrates the victim’s desperation to live even in the early stages of death through the gas chambers. Their individual stories and situations are expressed and explained through the eyes of narrator Tadek. The author uses narrative voice to set the tone of every individual life story and experience during the days of the Holocaust.…
