Theme Of Dreams In Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin In The Sun
Deferred dreams are an ongoing theme throughout the play Raisin in the Sun. In the play some people had their dreams deferred like Walter, Mama, and Beneatha.
Walter’s dream was to own a liquor store and have money so he can afford things for his family. Walter wanted to have a better job than his dad working job. He wanted to be the one in charge, the “Man”. Walter misplaced trust in Willy, who stole the money, and also the money for Beneatha.
Mama dream is to have a house because she has been waiting to own a house for thirty-five years. They weren’t able to save money because her husband and she were doing labor work.
And Beneatha’s dream is to become a doctor because she wants to assist people in Africa. Like Walter she has to hold back

Dreams change whether we want them to or not, but how might dreams change if they are ignored? Langston Hughes describes a dream deferred in his poem, "Harlem: A Dream Deferred", "What happens to a dream deferred?”; “Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?" He compares a dream deferred to various concepts. In connection to the play, written by Lorraine Hansberry, "A Raisin in the Sun" the Younger family, an impecunious African-American family, struggle in achieving their dreams, having to postpone them. Although the Younger family each face the same challenge, character Walter Younger is unalike the rest as his dreams deferred impact his personality and his actions. I argue that Walter Younger best illustrates the central theme of Hughes’…

In Lorraine Hansberry’s play, “A Raisin in the Sun,” she does a great job of intertwining Langston Hughes’ poem “Montage of a Dream Deferred,” to incorporate her underlying theme of dreams. In his poem, Hughes asks "What happens to a dream deferred?" and then goes on to list the different things that might happen to a person if his dreams are put "on hold." His overall point is that whatever happens to a postponed dream is never positive. Meanwhile, the question Hansberry poses in her play is, "What happens to a person whose dreams grow more and more passionate — while his hopes of ever achieving those dreams grow dimmer each day?" Dreams get put on hold for many different reasons but in the case of the Youngers, it was their home environment that ensured that none of them would be able to accomplish their ultimate dreams.…

In Lorraine Hansberry’s play, A Raisin in the Sun, she tells the value and purpose of dreams and how oftentimes dreams do get deferred. Hansberry got the title for the play based off of Langston Hughes’ famous poem A Dream Deferred. The language Hansberry uses reflects the deeper meaning of Hughes’ poem. Although the Younger women have lived in the same apartment for generations, they each face their unique trials and tribulations. Mama is faced with the decision of how to spend the money she received from her deceased husband’s insurance settlement; Ruth has to choose if she wants to have an abortion; and Bennie continues her aspirations of being a doctor and young feminist in the 1940s. All three women’s stories fall back on one common factor: a dream deferred.…

The French author Victor Hugo once said, “There is nothing like a dream to create the future.” The quote means whenever you have a dream, the dream shapes and sets your future. Hugo’s quote is correct because dreams are the key to setting your goals so you can achieve further in the future. In Lorraine Hansberry’s play A Raisin in the Sun, this quote is true because of Walter’s dream to be the man of the house, Benethea’s dream to live past society’s expectations of an African American woman and become a doctor, and Mama’s dream is to have her family united as one.…

What is the true purpose of the American Dream? Through her play A Raisin in the sun, Loraine Hansberry tries to educate readers that we not only dream for the sake of accomplishment, we also dream for the promise of hope. Each person has a different vision in regards to the American Dream, but one commonality between every goal is the motivation it brings. We all deal with difficulties in life and, as reflected in the title, we are like raisins in the sun, shriveling up unless we have a cloud of imagination to protect us from doubt and despair. In every society there are those who "only see the circle," the repetitive cycle represented by the sun that prevents dreams and improvement; but the circle does not exist. As Asagai explains, the…

First and foremost throughout A Raisin in the Sun the Younger’s house is where the story takes place from beginning to end of the book. The Youngers do indeed leave the house, but the story does not change scenery. The house is a metaphor, it is like a train station there is always someone coming and someone going. The Younger’s household is crumbling down. The house crumbling down is a symbol for the family tearing apart over money. Since the movie changes scenery at time the viewer would not get the metaphor. The book makes you think, what could the metaphor be? The house is not the only metaphor. Mama has a plant that she planted in a pot, and it is still growing. It metaphorically means her dream, and family growing. In the movie you can…
