Theme Of Killing In Fahrenheit 451

“It’s not the books you need, it’s some of the things that once were in books” (78). Fahrenheit 451 , written by Ray Bradbury is a science fiction book that is set in the future. Guy Montag, a fireman, has never once questioned his job of destroying printed books, along with the houses, until he has to run for his life for having them. Destroying information, creating mechanical hounds, and killing people are three acts that occurred in Fahrenheit's society, that could also occur in ours. In our society, innocent people are being killed for no reason. Towards the beginning of Fahrenheit 451 , “[Winston, along with Beatty and the rest of the firemen], burned a woman”(47). The innocent woman did not deserve to die in that way. There are many people in our society that are being shot and killed for no reason as well. Later on in the book, towards Beatty, “... Montag shot one continuous pulse of liquid fire…” (113). In this situation, Montag shot Beatty in self-defense. There are different stories of police shooting civilians, and vise-versa as a sign of self-defense. In our society, killing is not the only thing we share in common with the society of Fahrenheit 451 ,but it does seem to be a big one.
After Montag murders Beatty, “he turned and the Mechanical Hound was there”(114). The Mechanical Hound’s destructive nature, allows for it to easily determine its target. That is similar to some technologies in our society, where they are able to detect objects, and humans that may appear unusual. As Montag escapes, “He was three hundred yards downstream when the Hound reached the river” (133). The hound’s advanced components helped it to quickly find Montag. There are many different gadgets in our society that help to track people similar to the hound. Technology will continue to grow and advance in the
