The speaker tells us how death is patient and generous. Death not only is being a gentleman to the speaker, but he also takes her on a carriage ride. On the ride he takes her through places that she remembers, even one where she is left buried. We are left thinking that the speaker is alive throughout their journey and that death is taking her on a ride to her burial spot. But once we reach the last stanza of the poem, we are then surprised that the speaker has been dead for centuries and that it’s her spirit thinking about the day of her death. We are then told that her journey not only continues after her grave, but it goes on into…
Tim McGraw's song, "Live Like You Were Dying" relates to William Bryant's poem, "Thanatopsis" because they both focus on living life to the fullest, so that when death strikes it will be welcomed and not feared. McGraw speaks of a friend who was told recently that he had cancer. Afterwards, instead of becoming fearful of the, "breathless darkness" (Bryant line 12), the man decided to go and accomplish everything he always wanted to do. Unfortunately the man realized that if he were to die then he would not be satisfied with the accomplishments in his life. As a result the man accomplished many great things such as, "skydiving, ...rocky mountain climbing,... [and riding] 2.7 seconds on a bull" (McGraw lines 52-54). In other words the man did…
The illustrated text “The viewer” by Shaun Tan and Gary Crew tells the story of the curious protagonist, Tristan whose obsession with random artefacts lead him to discover a corrupt view master, in which depicts horrific events of our own history. The protagonist and responders are lead to make several discoveries in which force a re-evaluation of modern society and their attitude towards the world. The theme of urban disintegration and wastefulness is explored throughout the text. The use of the simile “arched like a yellow moon about the warehouses and factories” emphasises the extent to which the dump that “Stretched over acres of drift sand” has grown.…
on a journey and he can’t stop or sleep until he gets to the destination. “ And miles before I sleep, “ . The theme of this poem would be “ To never give up on your goal you had set “ . “ But I have promises to keep.” For the song “ Live Like You Were Dying “ was about Tim McGraw telling about his friend’s journey. The theme of the song would be “ To never give up and keep going” The similarities of the two texts is that they both describe a journey of two people.…
Have you felt you wanted to get somewhere but are too afraid to do it. In George Gray he is reaching to find meaning in his life but is too afraid to find something. He is too scared that he will be hurt by the outcome or defeated by life in some way that he will not reach out. Now in his poem he is telling how he wants to find the meaning of life by saying he will set the sails to and find it.…
“Our journey had advanced—our feet were almost come to that odd Fork in Being’s road—Eternity—by Term”, (Dickinson, 1890). Life is a journey. In Robert Frost’s poem “The Road Not Taken” (1916), a man comes up to a fork in the road, and he must make a choice as to which direction to take. In Jean Rhys’ short story “Used to Live Here Once” (1976), a woman is walking down a road remembering things along the road that were different the last time she saw them. The road itself is a symbol of life’s journey. Both Frost’s poem and Rhys’ short story are very good pieces of literature and are similar to one another. Taking a closer look and breaking down both the poem and short story will show the symbolism of the journey, the journey which is called life.…
There is repetition - particularly of "Dem tell me" - throughout the poem, creating a sense of rhythm.…
The use of repetition is used almost after ever verse, “God help me, I was only nineteen” the effect this gives on the listener is it makes you feel what the composer is conveying you to feel. You feel the pain and the grieving the veterans went through and it makes you realize that some men were so young to go out and experience such things that no human being should go through.…
Listening to Tim McGraw’s hit song: “Live Like You Were Dying,” I love the lyrics, “Like tomorrow was a gift and ya got eternity to think about what to do with it. . . . I hope you get the chance to live like you were dyin '” This song resonates with me because medically I…
One of the themes I chose was death and suffering. There was constantly death and suffering happening in the book.My abstact theme is love. Elie is constantly showing love for his father. Both of the themes are demonstrated in the book however love is not very often talked about. I will start with the theme of death and suffering.…
In the by Black veil Brides is a great song about giving it your all even if it kills you. He uses many lines in the song to show just how much he tried, and how much blood, sweat, and tears he put in just to be remembered. He uses the quote “As my soul’s laid to rest “ to say that with everything he has given, to be remembered, the only thing left to give is his soul, which in this case was a very good choice of simile. Another way to look at this quote is that he is okay with dying after all that he has given up.…
After reading“Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost”and listened to the song “live Like You Were Dying”the similarities were they were both living life because you never know when you are going to die like at the ending of “stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”it said “and miles i go before i sleep” and “Live Like You Were Dying” the guy had brain cancer. The theme of both of them is to leave life life to the fullest because you never know when you are going to die.…
Dylan Thomas would have approved of this song because it is a perfect depiction of fighting against the thought of death. In the poem “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night” good night is used by Thomas as a metaphor for death. Thomas expresses his beliefs, do not allow death to happen, fight it, and embrace your time on this planet; he says even the old should “burn and rave” at the thought of such a thing occurring. Tim McGraw covers a storyline in the song “Live Like You Were Dying” where a man comes to a near death experience and “burns and raves” against the thought of his life coming to an end. In the song a secondary character asks “how’s it hit cha when you get that kind of news?”…
Also, one can infer that the speaker is on her way to death by the word “Immortality” in the poem, but she does not treat it as a fearful thing. Instead, Death shows “civility” by taking time out for the speaker, and the speaker gives up her “labor, and [her] leisure too” to enjoy the carriage ride. In the third stanza, the readers can see that the speaker experiences nostalgia by seeing children playing, fields of grazing grain, and the setting sun. In other words, Death is taking her through her old memories, and this is where the speaker’s feelings switched to the realization of the harsh reality of death. With the first three stanzas, the speaker depicts the feelings of relaxation and readiness for death, and this would be strange for readers since death is a controversial topic, and many would not be ready for it.…
My horse shakes his head to remind me that we should not stop because we have not reached our destination. I am admiring this secluded, quiet place. Although I would love to stay, I realize that I must move on because I have obligations to fulfil. Figurative Meaning of Frost’s “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” Frost’s poem “Stopping…
